17:03:42 <brainycmurf> Agenda
17:03:44 <brainycmurf> #topic [Proposal] Replace GNOME with KDE in Fedora Workstation
17:03:48 <brainycmurf> #link https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/425
17:03:50 <brainycmurf> KDE SIG wants an official response from Workstation WG so they can present proposal to Fedora Council
17:03:53 <brainycmurf> Allan is uncomfortable about the Workstation WG getting involved with this.
17:03:55 <brainycmurf> Kalev and Owen want to keep Workstation name only for us, not for KDE. Don't force users to research which version they prefer.
17:03:58 <brainycmurf> Kalev suggests providing a neutral answer: we would not oppose KDE becoming an edition, but also don't endorse it
17:04:01 <brainycmurf> Chris suggests this is out of scope for Workstation WG. Notes that two Workstation editions could result in confusing marketing.
17:04:04 <brainycmurf> Allan wants GNOME to remain an implementation detail, not something that gets marketed.
17:04:06 <brainycmurf> Neal wants us to decide more clearly how we should market our relationship with GNOME.
17:04:08 <brainycmurf> Working Group discusses whether "Fedora Workstation" has been rebranded to "Fedora Linux Workstation" or not (it seems Council renamed our product?)
17:04:11 <brainycmurf> Allan is concerned about KDE becoming an edition. This could be a mistake.
17:04:13 <brainycmurf> Michael proposes adopting Kalev's proposing that Workstation WG remain neutral, and Owen's proposal that we request Workstation branding be reserved for us and not for KDE, and additionally request that Workstation remain the primary marketing focus.
17:04:19 <brainycmurf> Kalev and Allan want more time for further discussion. Even though Fedora KDE has been waiting for a while, this is too important to rush.
17:04:22 <brainycmurf> Michael agrees to draft response to KDE SIG
17:04:24 <brainycmurf> Allan asks where do we want Workstation to be in the future and how do we expect to get there? We'd like Fedora Workstation to be a big success, the default that people think of when thinking of desktop Linux. Active community, strong brand, highly regarded in a way that is not true today. This requires strong coordination with Workstation as the primary deliverable; community must focus on docs, community support,
17:04:29 <brainycmurf> etc. With two desktops we lose focus and it becomes much harder to build community around Workstation. It's hard to see Workstation achieving its goals if we do this.
17:04:32 <brainycmurf> Kalev wants to tread carefully to avoid alienating contributors who use other desktops. Michael agrees we need all Fedora contributors, including those who don't use Workstation, for Workstation to be successful.
17:04:35 <brainycmurf> We decide we're not ready to draft a response to KDE SIG after all. Need further discussion.
17:04:37 <brainycmurf> Allan: it's a question of strategic direction. If having a bunch of different Fedora products is Fedora project's goal (and it seems to be) then we probably shouldn't fight that, but even might want separate non-Fedora branding, website, etc. Owen mentions we probably don't have resources to do this. Moving away from Fedora branding seems very risky.
17:04:42 <brainycmurf> Kalev: we don't want be replaced by KDE, we leave question of whether KDE should be an edition to Fedora Council, but we want Workstation to remain the primary Fedora desktop and focus of Fedora desktop efforts
