16:01:45 <acozine> #info samccann is out today
16:02:28 <acozine> I'm wrestling with authn/authz issues so my head isn't really in the documentation space
16:02:36 <acozine> who's around?
16:02:50 <acozine> anybody have a topic they want to discuss?
16:02:56 <ariordan> o/
16:03:03 <acozine> #chair ariordan
16:03:03 <zodbot> Current chairs: acozine ariordan
16:03:47 <ariordan> I'm looking at one of the docs survey issues: https://github.com/ansible/ansible/issues/75506
16:04:16 <acozine> cool!
16:05:18 <ariordan> I'll start with the user guide.
16:05:27 <acozine> that sounds great
16:06:23 <acozine> as brian noted, using `hosts: all` is not necessarily dangerous, but in most cases you want to use a pattern there
16:07:24 <ariordan> I was wondering whether it would make sense to use hosts: <group> to indicate a user-substitute, or to use a name like hosts: staging.
16:07:24 <bcoca> at least in intor i would clarify there are 3 ways to select hosts for a play, hosts: being the most specific , --limit being 'additional restrictions' and inventory itself being the other
16:07:42 <acozine> if your machines/VMs are organized by function, you don't want to install databases on the web machines, or web servers on the databse machines
16:08:14 <bcoca> so plays that are specific purupsoe should be restricting to specific hsots/groups
16:08:34 <bcoca> but other plays, i.e update security packages, are meant to be universal
16:09:26 <bcoca> set dns/timeservers/routes/etc many things can be looked at as both universal (you define the data by group by applies to all) or you can setup plays with specific data for each group ... so it also depens a lot on context
16:09:28 <acozine> true, that's where adding context would help
16:10:37 <bcoca> i would keep hosts: alll on 'geneirc examples' but if we are doing specific things like 'installing db' .. hosts: dbservers makes more sense (we have done this alreayd in some places)
16:10:40 <ariordan> Thanks, I'll get the PR started for the user guide and add a link to this meeting so I can iterate.
16:11:03 <acozine> ariordan: sounds great, I think either of your ideas would help
16:11:31 <acozine> #chair bcoca

16:12:48 <acozine> anything else folks want to talk about?
16:14:06 <acozine> I think half of the US is on vacation all week
16:14:21 <acozine> and half of Europe is having a happy hour
16:14:27 <ariordan> :)
16:14:48 <acozine> not to mention flu season and the dratted pandemic
16:14:49 <bcoca> i shoujld do both ...
16:14:59 <acozine> so it's a quiet week
16:15:01 <remindbot[m]> @smccann:matrix.org cyb-clock chimes Fifteen exciting, thrilling minutes have slipped by whilst we plot to take over the universe, one doc at a time!
16:15:02 <bcoca> sssh
16:15:48 <ariordan> There's a fox lurking outside my window. It's unusual to see one in the daytime.
16:16:13 <acozine> wow
16:16:22 <acozine> we have foxes, but we almost never see them
16:16:27 <bcoca> they used to raid my chickens all the time
16:16:31 <acozine> the coyotes we do see sometimes
16:16:52 <acozine> bcoca: you have chickens in NJ?
16:17:39 <acozine> and the various weasels, though we tend to smell those more than we see them
16:18:18 <bcoca> acozine: spain
16:18:32 <acozine> ariordan: do you have a bird-feeder? is the fox lurking by your window with intent?
16:18:40 <bcoca> in nj they are pidgeons and i would be training foxes to help em be more effective
16:18:40 <acozine> bcoca: ah, that makes more sense
16:19:06 <bcoca> acozine: but i do have 'llive chicken' shop 6 blocks away, where you can look it in the eye before choosing it for your meal
16:19:42 <ariordan> We don't have a bird feeder, but we there's a family of pheasants living in the garden, so maybe that's why the fox is around.
16:19:51 <acozine> ah
16:20:42 <acozine> I think our foxes mostly live on rabbits and mice and squirrels
16:20:58 <bcoca> they live on 'anything smaller they can catch'
16:21:48 <ariordan> We have hares here too, but they mostly keep a low profile.
16:24:29 <acozine> I officially pronounce today "DaWGs Wildlife Discussion Day"
16:24:44 <acozine> but unfortunately, I need to go back to my authn/authz struggles
16:25:13 <acozine> ariordan: hope your daytime fox is not out because it's sick
16:25:28 <acozine> bcoca: happy Thanksgiving
16:25:45 <acozine> general note to the channel:
16:25:46 <ariordan> Good luck, acozine_
16:25:53 <acozine> Thursday is a holiday in the US
16:26:02 <acozine> most folks have both Thursday and Friday off
16:26:27 <acozine> but US chatters will be back Monday
16:26:28 <bcoca> happy holidays all
16:26:36 <acozine> thanks, folks!
