!topic (2388961) glycin backend saving jpg format does not work at all
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:18:57
this one seems a bit...mysterious. there's some kind of bug! nobody wants to say what actual consqeuences it has
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:19:26
from mclasen's comment it sounds like it's not even exactly a bug...
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:19:44
I dunno, I _believe_ it's a bug
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:19:55
we've hit a lot of these with glycin this cycle
<@geraldosimiao:matrix.org>
16:20:03
"The Work Is Mysterious and Important" (Mark)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:20:38
well, yeah, looking at it more closely there's *some* kind of bug here
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
16:20:50
fwiw I'm working on updating glycin to the latest version which has some bug fixes (which ones? who knows!)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:20:56
if jpeg doesn't support transparency, we shouldn't get a pixbuf with an alpha channel by loading a jpeg file, right?
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:21:07
I guess it's not *that* dangerous to do a FE for this even if no one can name an affected application?
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:21:08
but it seems pretty abstruse as-is. i'm -1 FE without a concrete impact demonstrated
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:21:32
Simon de Vlieger the theory for FEs (which we've been a bit lax with lately) is that you don't get one by default, you *have* to demonstrate some kind of sensible reason to get one
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:21:38
But that's pretty weak, and without an application I have no idea how to test.
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:21:43
Yea.
<@kashyapc:fedora.im>
16:21:50
Yeah, it's not clear what is exactly affected. I have a hard time parsing it to figure out the real impact.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:21:53
the fact that this bug was able to be filed means an application _was_ affected
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:22:02
you don't file a bug for nothing
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:22:15
Yea but then we got a reproducer in the form of a code snippet.
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
16:22:21
Sure, but a blocking application?
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
16:22:30
It's possible it is just some application for personal use affected
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:22:31
blocking applications are not a requirement for FEs
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:22:40
they are a requirement for blockers
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
16:22:43
No, but they help the case a lot
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:22:47
Conan Kudo well, not necessarily. mamoru could've been just poking around. it's hard to be sure
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
16:22:55
At least *some* application would help
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:22:58
the blocking app comment was for assessing this as a blocker
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:23:14
i'd be fine considering it as an FE if someone said 'oh this breaks <popular app foo>'. just nobody has said that yet.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:23:51
I mean, every GTK based image loader uses gdk-pixbuf
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:24:05
so take the sample image and load it in eog or something
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:24:37
(and then save it again, that's where the bug is supposed to occur; when it tries writing a JPEG with an alpha channel)
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:24:48
outside of LXQt, COSMIC, and KDE, all the spins use gdk-pixbuf for wallpapers too
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:24:57
but alpha channel on wallpapers is weird
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:25:26
I think the entire issue is that it *thinks* JPEGs have alpha channels which isn't a problem during rendering, but when it saves it tries to write it out and breaks, something like that.
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
16:25:27
Oh ho, I see
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
16:25:43
Yeah, that's pretty broken
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:25:44
yeah, it makes sense that's the issue
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:25:50
the fact that it thinks there's an alpha channel after loading a jpeg definitely seems like a problem. but not sure if it's all jpegs or just this one
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:25:55
and it also makes sense this is a problem because JXL supports alpha, but not classic JPEG
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:26:20
wait, is the sample file a jxl not a jpeg?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:26:33
and JPG2000 does support alpha too Iirc
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:26:36
and JPG2000 does support alpha too iirc
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
16:26:56
so that means it's _possible_ to feed a JPG data stream to a JPEG codec that is semi-invalid
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
16:27:02
No, we're just theorizing reasons why the bug exists I think :)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:27:30
yeah. let's not debug it here
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:27:47
we can punt or reject
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:27:53
i'm fine with either. other votes?

<@adamwill:fedora.im>
17:02:15

<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:02:22
However, I *think* the bug can be closed, both things Peter Boy (ServerWG, Docs) mentioned don't seem to be the same thing as the initial bug.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
17:02:24

<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:02:29
I'm going to vote that this issue should be closed as fixed
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:02:57
The offsets are there, I can flash the image and I can confirm it's mountable and the firmware ends up on it. I don't know where the LVM errors come from, I can't try to boot-test but if it gets to grub the firmware has done its thing.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:03:57
The other Peter did understand my wording. Part of the problem is fixed, there is another part that blocks booting.
<@ngompa:fedora.im>
17:04:05
I'm going to vote that this issue should be closed as fixed
<@ngompa:fedora.im>
17:04:09
I did the thing and made the space
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:04:22
I have to add a seriell terminal to see what is going on.
<@ngompa:fedora.im>
17:04:31
the other things brought up are not part of this particular bug
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:04:36
Peter Boy (ServerWG, Docs): What I'd like to see confimred is that initially you only got to grub2 on the minimal images; and with the fix you get to grub2 on all images right?
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:04:56
(whatever happens after the kernel gets loaded, different thing)
<@ngompa:fedora.im>
17:05:01
The LVM errors are not new, LVM is not supported with u-boot
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
17:05:11
Peter Boy (ServerWG, Docs) you mentioned two separate problems neither of which seems to be about the offset, and one of which seems impossible (there's no LVM on the workstation image)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:05:33
All images bootet to grub, but then stalled.
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:06:16
Ok; then we should probably consider this one done and have a new one for the "no output after grub".
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
17:06:44
yeah, sounds good to me.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:06:50
The original issue was, none of the Rockchip devices booted. Neil fixed the gap. But this didn't fix the boot issue, just the overwriting of partition 1
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:07:30
Peter Boy (ServerWG, Docs): In the initial bug report you wrote that workstation and xfce only showed u-boot, didn't get to grub and now they seem to get to grub.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:07:33
There is not only not output, but nothing at all. The poser consumption goes down.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:08:22
Yes, the to to grub, but not further. How do you want to use workstation just with grub?
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:08:59
I can't, I just mean to say that it's a different bug from no-room-for-firmware I guess.
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
17:09:17
I don't think anyone is saying this new situation isn't possibly blocking, just that it needs to be a different bug
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
17:09:46
(With the same-ish end-result)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:09:47
The no room for firmware was one Hypotheses what may be the problem for not booting.
<@nielsenb:fedora.im>
17:10:03
Though I personally do all my text editing at the grub edit prompt
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:10:08
Obviously, is is not the only problem.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:11:33
The original problem war not, to have a nice gap, but to get the device complete a boot und get usable.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
17:11:52
!info it seems like the original bug here is solved but Peter (Boy) is now seeing further issues reaching a working system after the bootloader. we will decide how to follow up on those after the meeting
