took place in 2006 13:02:47 gnome received 181 applications for google summer of code 13:02:49 none of them were from women 13:02:53 i wasn't invovled at that time 13:03:05 ppl who did this - chris ball, hannah wallach with mairin duffys help with marketing 13:03:24 created poster for women - instead of competitive language "rock star" "best the best" used more collaborative language, "opportunity to work with mentor" "learn" 13:03:29 to try to attract more women 13:03:40 google summer of code for 1300 students every year get funding to work on free software projects 13:03:46 gaudec 2009: 5% women 13:03:54 i was one of 8 women at guadec 13:04:06 the board approached me and asked me to review our outreach efforts 13:04:15 before i go in to talk about outreach program for women in depth 13:04:20 this happened recently at fosdem 13:04:34 one of the opw participants approached by men... surprised at seeing a girl at the conference 13:04:44 if you say things like that at a conference, it makes women feel uncomfortable 13:04:54 great blog post by ada initiative called "breaking the unicorn law" 13:05:17 "unicorn law: every women in free software is asked to talk about women in free software" 13:05:26 not every women participating wants to talk about diversity or is an expert in diversity 13:05:33 this blog post has great resources about learning about this 13:05:40 emphasize importance of having a support communti for women 13:05:50 even women from diff projects to meet together, to feel like they belong 13:06:08 since 2009 we've had 8 internship rounds 13:06:17 this is a poster, also designed by mairin, from the current / last round 13:06:26 outreach program for women offers mentorship in free osftware projects throughout the year 13:06:32 specifically for remote internships twice a year 13:06:35 we've had 8 rounds of internships 13:06:46 170 participants so far with many free softawre orgs (slide is full of them) 13:06:49 fedora is one of those organizations 13:06:54 equalizer and promotor sponsors - 13:07:04 wikimedia, google, hp, intel, mozilla, linux foundation, open source orbotics foudnations, red hat 13:07:14 there are more orgs that have supported at other levels 13:07:33 red hat contributes marina's time, software freedom conservancy contributes akren's time, ropes and gray attorneys contributes legal services 13:07:35 how we do it 13:07:42 we address women (Cis and trans) And gender queer directly 13:08:04 we learned that... the language of women is exclusive by default so it's important to also mention trans and gender queer 13:08:08 we accept non-students and non-coders 13:08:14 many who are ineligible for summer of code 13:08:25 there's design, docs, engagement - anyything that can help free software projects 13:08:34 very important part of how we run the program is a collaborative application process 13:08:41 orgs have mentors listed on their progam landing pages 13:08:53 applicants are asked to contact a mentor and are req to complete a task relevant to the job 13:09:04 for linux kernel - many applicants participate, not as many slots 13:09:06 can be competitive 13:09:14 program time - focused to build experience in free software 13:09:17 it's a dedicated focus 13:09:20 financailly supported 13:09:31 one of the things i really like about program -we require participants blog at least every 2 weeks about their work 13:09:38 their blog posts are postede to women in free software planet 13:09:45 and also at individual planets for the upstreams they work in 13:10:10 there is also career development advisor for interns - sumana - has office horus in irc to discuss next steps in building a free software career 13:10:19 we also have $500 travel allowance to enable interns to come to conferences 13:10:23 to meet their mentor etc 13:10:30 (there are two opw interns at flock right now btw -mizmo) 13:10:34 statistics about program 13:10:46 very important to encourage women to propose talks and present at conferences 13:11:01 another step in this chain of things where women often need more encouragement than just inviting them to propose talks makes a great difference 13:11:26 jessica - diversity chari at python - asks every women she knows to propose a talk as a result of her work, pycon - number of women presenting went from single percentage numbers to 33% female speakers this year 13:11:41 i learned from leslie hawthorn - often women and internships, talk about return on investment 13:12:12 important to realize - just having had a chance to share our values, having mentored the participant and having access to influecne how they think about free software - wrote api docs and smtp client and server tutorials 13:15:11 eliane ramos worked on gnome projects... tasks manager called getting things gnome, added geolocation feature to tasks 13:15:43 tashwin khurana did internship with open source robotics foundation worked on gazebo robot simulator that worked with open street map, wrote plug in to represent buildings as polygons, and represent roads and traffic stops in simulated env 13:16:01 sayali lunkad worked on openstack... added graphs from ceilometer to add graphics on horizon dashboard 13:16:05 tehse are the kinds of projects our interns do 13:16:08 3 month long internship 13:16:14 guadec 2014 was 13% women 13:16:29 we had 23 women in attendance 13:16:44 accomplishments of alumns 13:16:49 21 had full session talks at FOSS conferences 13:16:55 16 found employment or contracts with sponsoring orgs 13:17:06 14 went on to other foss internships or focused opps, such as GSoc or hacker school 13:17:10 7 became mentors in their orgs 13:17:14 3 organized local tech groups 13:17:21 1 became a gnome foundation board member 13:17:48 last summer applicants for linux kernel... came ahead of industry heavyweight contributors to linux kernel 13:17:51 improements for everyone - 13:18:07 program resulted in a general list of mentors which could serve as a general resource to any newcomers to community 13:18:12 newcomers tutorial in gnome 13:18:16 easy and moderate bugs identified 13:18:47 blogging is a requirement so intern blogs aggregated to project planet 13:18:58 women in gsoc statistics 13:19:01 2011: 7.1% 13:19:04 2012: 8.3% 13:19:08 2013: 9.5% 13:19:12 2014: 10% 13:19:26 applicants of women in gsoc has steadily climbed up 13:19:34 another program google does for high school students - google code in 13:19:38 the numbers are not so great - 13:19:43 1 out of 20 in 2013 was female 13:19:45 0 out of 20 in 2014 13:19:54 (these numbers are for google code in prize winners) 13:20:09 10% of participants in 2014 were girls but none went on to win a prize 13:20:14 we are not reaching girls in free software 13:20:22 education statistic for 70 OPW participants from 2014 13:20:25 53% students 13:20:34 24% recent grads < 3 since last degree 13:20:37 17% non-recent grads 13:20:44 6% some college edu, but not pursuing degree 13:20:47 37% pursuing masters 13:20:51 9% had or were pursuing phd 13:21:20 we're reaching people who don't have access to higher education 13:21:27 free software a great way to get started in tech without a degree 13:21:33 participation by country 13:21:51 US, India, Romania, Canada, UK, Italy, Czech Republic are the countries best represented 13:22:19 * mizmo won't transcribe slide, but be sure to check it out after preso 13:22:43 lack of participation by country 13:22:56 a lot of countries in middle east, africa, asia are left out, very low participation 13:23:24 we don't have statistics for it, but we have few participants of color in free software (in the US) 13:23:44 we're not seeing them in freesoftware, and not at the levels they aprticipate in computer science degrees 13:24:18 so that's some info about who else is underrepesented 13:24:29 here's a small survey of projects trying to address various aspects of representation 13:24:40 ada intiative dedicated to increasing participation of women in open source and technology 13:24:56 take a systematic approach - they help orgs and people adopt anti harassment policies for community and conferences 13:25:06 also have materials for ally skills building - these are online and i recommend checking them out 13:25:15 they also have workshops for imposter syndrome - internalized sexism by women 13:25:24 also they run a conference for women in open tech and culture called ada camp 13:25:29 ive been to 3 ada camps in the us 13:25:35 next ones are coming up in berlin and bangalore this fall 13:25:51 if it's local to you, applications are open, please encourage women you know to consider going 13:25:57 another project i really love - the ascend project 13:26:02 started by lucas from mozilla 13:26:11 goal to reach people underrepresented and from udnerprivileged backgrounds 13:26:18 dont necessarily have college education and have to live paycehck to paycheck 13:26:28 they really need... offers $50/day financial support for the participants 13:26:36 offers laptops ppl can keep if they successfully finish program 13:26:47 this addresses people who would not necssarily be at a place in their life to particiapte in a program like opw 13:27:06 lucas' motivation for this is that she came from a job where she had to work paycehck to paycheck and then ralized technology brings good opps for mobility 13:27:09 she started at mozilla 13:27:13 wanted to help others from a similar background 13:27:26 participants learn javascript,a utomated testing for mozilla, and also free software communities and opportunities 13:27:33 first 6 week pilot will be in portland oregon this fall 13:27:40 next 6 week progarm is planned for new orleans 13:27:42 more work is done by 13:27:46 software carpentry by mozilla 13:27:50 two day bootcamps 13:28:05 they teach free software tools that scientists can use 13:28:10 open hatch does open source comes to campus workshops 13:28:20 often work with women in computer science orgs on campuses to invite women to their events 13:28:24 open hatch running dozens of workshops in US 13:28:31 not very present in europe but they have great resources 13:28:37 excellent training they use in theri workshops 13:28:47 i encourage ppl to check out their reources, perhaps replicate it locally if you can 13:28:50 more work done by- 13:28:58 women who code... technical skill workshops and meetings for women 13:29:11 they have a series of meetups in san francisco area 13:29:25 help women start contributing to free software w explicit goal to help them apply for google summer of code or code in 13:29:27 other groups like that 13:29:29 pyladies 13:29:30 rails bridge 13:29:54 chick tech -
