So Im a FreeSoftware Activist in FreeSoftware Foundation Tamilnadu, FirefoxStudentAmabssador(Senior) in Mozilla. Contributing to Documentation, QA, TechEvangalism, and Marketing too. 14:19:52 adam24, cool! So you have experience with writing documentation? What kinds of tools were you using? Any specific markup language, build system, version control? 14:19:56 hi kirsti 14:20:19 Hi Mohammed, I'm Pete - I'm a sysadmin by trade and contribute to Fedora in whichever way my interests, abilities, and time can afford 14:20:29 but now, I have to leave 14:20:39 thanks again for taking charge, pbokoc 14:20:46 np 14:20:55 bye Pete 14:21:06 so I used only HTML and xml only, no tools I used before 14:21:49 * randomuser idly wonders if mozilla might also benefit from a modernized docs platform 14:22:09 adam24, no worries. Right now, all of Fedora Documentation (the guides you can find on https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/index.html ) are written in DocBook XML and transformed into HTML (and PDF and ePub) using a tool named publican 14:22:26 hm ok 14:22:44 but we're currently debating how to change that. DocBook is pretty hard to get into, so we're looking at markup like ASCIIDoc, Markdown, MediaWiki etc. 14:23:02 ok 14:23:28 adam24, anyway, here's a page with info about how to join the docs project properly - how to get a Fedora account if you don't have one, etc.: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Join_the_Docs_Project 14:23:33 (the part under "Yes") 14:24:41 most importantly, join the fedora-docs mailing list, get a FAS (Fedora Account System) account, and you might want to join the #fedora-docs channel here on FreeNode, that's where we normally hang out 14:24:58 ok sure 14:26:00 if you have any questions, ask around in #fedora-docs. You might not get an answer immediately, depending on the time of day (most of us are in Europe or Americas), but someone should get back to you eventually 14:26:05 or just use the mailing list, that's ok too 14:26:22 adam24: do you have a particular area of interest ? 14:26:36 or just IT docs in general? 14:27:44 no not like that. anything I will give mybest 14:29:07 adam24, currently the highest priority is to write release notes for Fedora 24. That's a pretty good task for a beginner - you don't need to know any special markup, you can just use the wiki for that - and it's not a big task, more like a set of fairly small tasks 14:29:28 ok 14:29:33 basically we have a list of "Changes" for Fedora 24 (the upcoming release): https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/24/ChangeSet 14:29:55 and we need to go through the list, find out who's responsible for each Change (it should be on the Wiki) 14:30:09 ok 14:30:34 and talk to that person and figure out 1) if the change will actually make it to F24 (not all of them always do), and 2) what it's about, how it impacts users - and write a couple of paragraphs about it 14:31:06 I'll send a mail to the fedora-docs list about the workflow later; in the meantime make sure you're subscribed to the list and we'll get you started 14:31:45 we're probably not going to be doing it for a few more weeks - the Alpha version hasn't come out, we usually try to get *some* release notes for the Beta release and a more complete version for the final release 14:34:14 well, looks like I scared him off :) 14:36:16 #topic Release Notes 14:36:55 we're getting close to F24 Alpha, unless it gets postponed again - it should come out on March 22 14:37:28 we don't usually produce release notes for Alpha since that's way too soon, but it's not a bad idea to start picking up Changes that interest you 14:38:12 #info Changes are here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/24/ChangeSet ; set yourself as Docs Contact on the change's tracker bug if you intend to document one 14:39:10 Beta should be coming out at the start of May and we'd like to have Changes documented for that, if possible 14:41:15 ok, moving on 14:41:17 #topic Publishing 14:41:49 I don't have much to say here, but everyone should take a look at the giant thread on fedora-docs (subject of the original mail is "Introduction!") 14:42:04 and voice any opinions or concerns you might have 14:42:47 the thread is pretty huge at 73 mails at the moment, but this is a big change and it's going to affect how we work going forward, so it's worth the time 14:44:59 #topic Open Floor 14:45:14 if anyone has anything else, now's your time 14:47:37 thanks for running the meeting ;) 14:48:47 thanks :) 14:50:05 anyway, if there's nothing else I'll end this, I have another meeting in 10 minutes and I'd like to do at least something productive today :I 14:52:41 #endmeeting
