15:16:23 <alex_rmezei> hi everyone
15:16:24 <alex_rmezei> :)
15:16:29 * JamesMcGuffee wonders if anyone thought the name of his blog was weird
15:16:33 <berkowitz__> Hi Alex
15:16:50 <alex_rmezei> I am working on Part B
15:16:56 <zanmello> The Fosse Boss? LOL
15:17:27 <burdged> :)
15:18:00 * heidie goes and looks
15:18:07 <alex_rmezei> I am working on B3-4, and I may need to redo part of A. I'll read it again very soon
15:18:46 <burdged> That's great alex_rmezei !
15:19:33 <heidie> #info alex_rmezei is workiing on B3-4, and I may need to redo part of A
15:19:52 <heidie> JamesMcGuffee: I like it!
15:20:24 <berkowitz__> I just wanted to check if this client is working. Are my messages being seen?
15:20:58 <alex_rmezei> I do see them berkowitz___
15:21:09 <berkowitz__> Thanks
15:21:16 <burdged> me too...
15:22:20 <berkowitz__> I am using a cloud ice client since my internet is not stable, thanks all for the confirmation
15:22:54 <heidie> Ah,yup.
15:24:26 <burdged> heidie: I don't recall...did we have an agenda for today?
15:24:49 <heidie> Yes, http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_2
15:24:53 <heidie> We are doing updates.
15:24:59 <heidie> Next topic is questions about phase 1?
15:25:10 <heidie> #topic Questions on Phase 1
15:25:14 <burdged> Ok...thanks!
15:26:40 <heidie> Who has questions on what you've been doing?
15:26:59 <JamesMcGuffee> I have a question
15:27:56 <JamesMcGuffee> on Part B.2 it said we didn't have to complete the secondary part as part of the assignment but, wouldn't we really want to do it to give a more complete overview of the process?
15:27:59 <heidie> Sure!
15:28:46 * heidie looks
15:28:54 <JamesMcGuffee> Also, I was unable to figure out how to attach an XLXS file to the foss2serve wiki, so I added the file to my home faculty pages and made a link on the wiki - is there an easier way?
15:29:37 <heidie> Yes, however what we found during the last POSSE was that folks were spending an inordinate amount of time trying to complete that.
15:29:39 <zanmello> James - There is an upload file button on the lower left hand side. Once you upload the file you can use the commands in the textbox to link to it
15:30:01 <heidie> And we didn't want to discourage folks. Just wanted them to get an understanding of how the process works.
15:30:30 <JamesMcGuffee> Uploading, I don't see an upload file button
15:30:32 <zanmello> I plan on spending more time with it after grading is done. :>
15:30:44 <burdged> JamesMcGuffee: Are you logged in?
15:30:47 <JamesMcGuffee> I'm using Chrome, should I try a different browser?
15:30:52 <alex_rmezei> I did spend much more time than the estimated 4.5 hours. But I did enjoy learning quite a few new things. :)
15:30:55 <JamesMcGuffee> Yes, logged in and in edit mode
15:31:16 <burdged> I'm using Firefox and can see it.
15:31:58 <zanmello> James - Do you see a ToolBox link at bottom left corner? It is under there
15:32:11 <JamesMcGuffee> no, I do not see that
15:32:22 <heidie> I believe that yo uhave to be logged in to see it.
15:32:49 <JamesMcGuffee> I am logged in and I just tried on Firefox (again logging in) I still don't see it
15:32:56 <zanmello> On my left panel I have Events, Learning Resources, Projects, Navigation and Toolbox
15:32:58 <JamesMcGuffee> I have a toolbar in the ipper left hand corner
15:33:29 <burdged> Do you see the other categories (Navigation, Projects, etc.)?
15:33:32 <JamesMcGuffee> there is an "embed file" button
15:33:57 <JamesMcGuffee> okay, I see it now
15:34:12 <zanmello> Not in the text box, on the left side of the web page
15:34:13 <JamesMcGuffee> I see a left plain text navigation
15:34:29 <JamesMcGuffee> no buttons, just text, I was looking for a graphic
15:35:43 <zanmello> James - what is outside your textbox on the left? Do you have POSSE Info under Events?
15:37:21 <heidie> Hello MohsenD
15:37:25 <JamesMcGuffee> Thanks for all the help, group. I was able to succesfully add and then link to the excel file
15:37:30 <heidie> Good!
15:37:34 <zanmello> wahoo
15:37:59 <MohsenD> hello, this is mohsen doroodchi , I shortened it for simplicity
15:38:05 <MohsenD> :)
15:38:09 <heidie> Welcome MohsenD
15:38:18 <zanmello> Hi MohsenD
15:38:22 <burdged> Hello!
15:38:24 <heidie> We're talking about any questions that folks have had with what they've been doing.
15:38:28 <heidie> Do you have any quesitons?
15:38:56 <MohsenD> not really , swamp in finals and final projects
15:39:07 <MohsenD> will be working hard the next couple weeks
15:39:15 <alex_rmezei> one of the questions on Part B was: Identify the meaning of each of the statuses below
15:39:31 <MohsenD> I think we should be able to see others work, right?
15:39:31 <alex_rmezei> was there a place on sourceforge to find the complete definitions?
15:40:08 <alex_rmezei> I spent quite some time on sourceforge trying to find it, but for some reason I did not succeed.
15:40:28 <heidie> Google might also have some hints.
15:40:40 <JamesMcGuffee> Alex, I experienced similar, I only found some of them (but I simply documented that on my wiki in the writeup)
15:40:43 <heidie> And if you can't find it on google, dropping by the foss2serve channel and asking is a good approach.
15:41:13 <heidie> :-) Using good FOSS protocol of course.
15:41:13 <alex_rmezei> i did find some of them in some of the projects' documentation.
15:41:17 <heidie> Ah, good.
15:41:37 <JamesMcGuffee> So, waiting until others update their wiki and just copying their answers is NOT good protocol?
15:41:49 <heidie> So the general rule here is that if you find something in a FOSS community that you don't understand and don't get a reasonable answer, ask the community.
15:41:50 <alex_rmezei> google works for me, I was worried I could not find it on sourceforge.
15:41:51 <heidie> :-)
15:41:54 <heidie> Reuse!
15:42:02 <alex_rmezei> :-)
15:42:17 <heidie> Finding information for FOSS projects can often rely on google or other search engine.
15:42:36 <alex_rmezei> got it! thank you! :)
15:43:18 <JamesMcGuffee> The thing I found most useful was being able to change the dates to see activity. A project I looked at seemed very active BUT over the last 12 months an 87% decrease in activity
15:43:41 <JamesMcGuffee> Which could mean lack of activity OR that the project is stabilizing
15:44:13 <JamesMcGuffee> Either way, it has an impact on how I might use the project in an educational setting
15:45:13 <heidie> Yes, right.
15:45:36 <heidie> And in cases like this, contacting the community and asking about forward direction can be very helpful.
15:46:05 <heidie> As a prof., one of the biggest mistakes that I made, and still make occassionally,, is to not ask the community soon enough.
15:46:33 <heidie> I spend an entire 2 days trying to get a web cam to work in VirtualBox with GNOME only to ask the community for help and be told that you likely couldn't do it!
15:47:23 <zanmello> I am worried about milestones and grading in the class.
15:48:39 <heidie> Ah, yes.
15:48:49 <heidie> As one issue, or as two separate things?
15:49:48 <zanmello> Well I can always assign a requirements doc is due on a certain date. But how do I know if it is correct? How do you stay ahead of the students?
15:50:41 <heidie> OK, so I use the community to check if the requirements are correct.
15:50:52 <zanmello> oh interesting
15:50:53 <heidie> I usually have some idea as to what the program is supposed to do.
15:51:11 <heidie> And make students come up with a list of questions as they create requirements.
15:51:20 <heidie> I then go through the list and answer the ones that I can.
15:51:30 <heidie> We then turn the set of questions over to the community and ask for input.
15:52:00 <heidie> And I grade on the quality of the requirements, but not the completeness unless they mim something that I think is obvious.
15:52:09 <zanmello> great! I am looking forward to talking more about the course logistics. Will be have a chance to do that when we are in person?
15:53:01 <heidie> Yes, we certainly will.
15:53:32 <heidie> My course including assignments is here; http://mars.wne.edu/~hellis/CS490/syllabus.html
15:53:54 <heidie> OK, we're approaching noon. Lets see if there are questions on stage 2?
15:54:01 <heidie> #topic Questions on Stage 2
15:54:42 <zanmello> thank you!
15:54:46 <alex_rmezei> i did not get the chance yet to look at stage 2 topics
15:54:59 <alex_rmezei> am I very far ebhind?
15:55:26 <alex_rmezei> wait, do you mean part B?
15:56:04 <JamesMcGuffee> The only thing on the wiki is "Details Coming Soon!" - so, my first questions is "When is soon?"
15:56:06 <alex_rmezei> I should finish everything on part B this week.
15:56:21 <burdged> alex_rmezei: no, stage 2 is the face 2 face meeting in Philadelphia
15:56:35 <alex_rmezei> I see. Thank you!
15:57:33 <heidie> Oh! Sorry. I'll get that up in the next day or two.
15:57:35 <JamesMcGuffee> Second question for stage 2, what, if any, computing equipment should we bring with us (i.e. it would be helpful if I didn't have to lug a heavy laptop through the airport but will if needed)
15:57:39 <heidie> My apologies, I thought that it was up.
15:57:40 <baochuan> I will need to leave the meeting. Have a class to teach at 11am (CDT). Bye.
15:57:50 <heidie> bye baochuan
15:57:52 <burdged> bye!
15:57:56 <alex_rmezei> bye!
15:57:56 <heidie> You will likely want your laptop.
15:58:10 <heidie> We'll be working on IRC and looking at various things throughout the workshop.
15:58:10 <alex_rmezei> my laptop has Win 8, would that be ok?
15:58:17 <JamesMcGuffee> third question: dress code: coat and tie every day?
15:58:20 <heidie> And hopefully installing a project or two.
15:58:26 * heidie laughs!
15:58:29 <heidie> No jacket or tie.
15:58:31 <alex_rmezei> :-)
15:58:33 <heidie> Casual is fine.
15:58:37 <heidie> Shorts if it is hot.
15:58:48 <stoney> JamesMcGuffee: yes… coat and tie (shhh…. I want to see this :))
15:59:22 <heidie> :-) Right!
15:59:25 * stoney likes to cause trouble… sometimes
15:59:25 <JamesMcGuffee> I could do both: coat, tie, and short pants
15:59:32 <stoney> even better!
15:59:36 <JamesMcGuffee> like the lead singer of AC/DC
15:59:58 <berkowitz__> Tuxedo T shirts do not count.
16:00:08 <JamesMcGuffee> I'm not sure my colleagues at NKU have ever seen me without a tie
16:00:11 <wardj1> guitarist
16:00:28 <JamesMcGuffee> thanks Jeff (for the rock correction)
16:00:37 <burdged> :) yes!
16:00:38 <heidie> Right.
16:00:38 <heidie> Any other questions?
16:00:55 <zanmello> all set
16:01:04 <JamesMcGuffee> Well, I would like to once again say thanks to our organizers and local hosts
16:01:19 <zanmello> looking forward to meeting everyone in person
16:01:41 <JamesMcGuffee> When I first saw Stage 1 exercises I was like "good grief" BUT as I've gone through them, slowly but surely information has leaked in
16:01:56 <JamesMcGuffee> leaked in my brain
16:02:43 <wardj1> Good information today. Thanks!
16:02:54 <alex_rmezei> ohloh.net gives a lot of metrics that I plan to use regularly in my classes. I love that site.
16:03:03 <heidie> Yes, me too!
16:03:20 <burdged> I have to run. I have a student waiting. Bye all!
16:03:25 <heidie> bye
16:03:27 <stoney> bye
16:03:27 <heidie> Any other questions?
16:03:29 <alex_rmezei> bye! :)
16:03:33 <heidie> I'll close the meeting if so.
16:03:39 <zanmello> bye
16:03:41 <heidie> #endmeeting
