23:01:52 <hislopg> :-)
23:01:58 * heidie notes that she is going to get called to dinner in a few minutes, but will hang while she can.
23:01:58 <hislopg> #topic Progress on Stage 1 activities
23:02:09 <darci> :)
23:02:26 <darci> Can we start with a short introduction, just name and institution
23:02:31 * TheBaxter waves hello
23:02:32 <hislopg> sure
23:02:34 <TheBaxter> #info Garrett Poppe, California State University, Dominguez Hills

23:03:17 <darci> Darci Burdge, Nassau Community College
23:03:29 <darci> Is that everyone?
23:03:44 <darci> #topic Updates
23:03:53 <darci> So how are things going?
23:04:54 <jburge> partway through part C until class got crazy
23:04:55 <darci> Can you provide an update regarding where you are in the stage 1 activities?
23:04:55 <hislopg> Are people making reasonable progress on Stage 1? any problems, issues, or comments?
23:05:01 <rhoyle> Almost caught up with the POSSE things to do… I should be done by tomorrow, then on to the April 19th items.
23:05:47 <darci> Are there any questions about the stage 1 activities?
23:05:56 <MarkG> I think I've completed my stage 1 activities.
23:06:12 <hislopg> OK... by the way, don't be bashful if you're a bit behind schedule on activities... you're not the only one!
23:06:31 <hislopg> MarkG: Great!
23:06:35 <TheBaxter> I also think I have completed stage 1 activities
23:06:53 <hislopg> Cool!
23:06:54 <rhoyle> The documentation says that GitHub has a way of showing the primary language for a project, but I’m not seeing it when I look. Am I not looking in the right place?
23:07:42 <darci> rhoyle: there is a colored bar that you click on...
23:07:50 <TheBaxter> correction still need April 19th items
23:08:07 <camm_> rhoyle: it should show up underneath the projects when you view your repository list
23:08:28 <camm_> https://github.com/cmacdonell
23:08:42 * rhoyle is looking....
23:08:58 <darci> This page shows where to look for the language bar
23:08:58 <camm_> see how 'ivshmem-guest-code' is in 'C'
23:09:05 <darci> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Project_Evaluation_(Activity)
23:09:42 <darci> Thank camm_ !
23:10:29 <rhoyle> Ah, I see now. I need to click on the colored bar.
23:10:38 <hislopg> correct.
23:10:44 <darci> Yes!
23:11:09 <rhoyle> Got it.
23:11:23 <darci> Other questions?
23:12:00 <rhoyle> I’m on the last part of stage 2, FYI.
23:12:01 <darci> I might add that completing B.4 and C.3 are essential for our face-to-face workshop.
23:12:18 <darci> rhoyle: Do you mean part B?
23:12:38 <rhoyle> Yes.
23:12:44 <darci> Great!
23:13:15 <TheBaxter> B4 can be a project of our own choosing?
23:14:01 <MarkG> Do we have to have a concrete activity for B/4/C.3, or can it be notes for an activity we would like to revise/develop?
23:14:21 <darci> There are some projects listed that we have worked with over the last few years. You can certainly choose, but it helps to have others who are working in the same project.
23:14:40 <darci> MarkG: Notes, ideas, thoughts are all good!
23:15:29 <darci> We are hoping that these initial thoughts will get fleshed out during our time together. It is often a collaborative effort!
23:15:59 <hislopg> TheBaxter: we encourage an HFOSS project from the ones we have used for the reason Darci describes. If by "project" you mean a class activity - it's whatever ideas you have
23:16:59 <darci> Has everyone signed up for stage 2 groups?
23:17:05 <TheBaxter> sounds good. I will develop course ideas around an HFOSS project then apply to my own after the workshop.
23:17:11 <darci> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups
23:17:30 <rhoyle> Not yet.
23:18:06 <darci> Your initial thoughts about what you want to do at the workshop are helpful for us as we plan.
23:18:21 <darci> You can always change your mind, many do, and that is fine!
23:19:18 <camm_> Further to what Darci said, I'd like to know what the Ushahidi folk would be interested in incorporating
23:19:45 <camm_> I see jburge and MarkG have signed up for Ushahidi in Stage 2 :)
23:20:22 * hislopg notes that Camm_ has a lot of Ushahidi experience...
23:20:26 <darci> FYI...camm_ will be a great resource for those of you interested in Ushahidi!!
23:20:30 <darci> :)
23:20:34 <MarkG> I was initially interested in Ushahidi because I wanted to better understand its architecture for a personal research project. would be happy to pick your brain some other time on that.
23:20:35 <darci> Two thumbs up!
23:21:15 <camm_> MarkG: sure thing, we had a previous POSSE attendee use it to track invasive grass in their state
23:21:20 <rhoyle> Signed up…. I joined Ushahidi and SE/Capstone
23:21:45 <jburge> It looks like there are a lot of options with Ushahidi. I plan to have the students investigate possible projects based on it as some of the early steps of their capstone. They will have three months to start thinking about what they want to do before starting dedicated work in December.
23:22:13 <camm_> rhoyle: great. jburge is also focussed on SE/Capstone
23:22:25 <camm_> (or so I read on the foss2serve site)
23:22:30 <MarkG> But for now, I've decided to think of CS1-relevant things, which might include looking at things like coding conventions, meaningful comments, test-drive design.
23:23:11 <camm_> MarkG: I did a project this year having CS1 students look at "Computing for Social Good" to broaden their horizons a bit
23:23:15 <MarkG> I'm interested in maybe trying to bring in Government-provided data, to map it and then use python in investigate it a little more. (Our CS1 class is in Python)
23:23:29 <MarkG> I would be interested in hearing more about that.
23:23:30 <camm_> Ushahidi was one of the examples.
23:24:04 <camm_> Sure thing! We teach Python in CS1, too, so this project did not involve code at all (Ushahidi is in PHP)
23:25:25 <MarkG> Did you students do an activity to explore the "Computing for Social Good" theme? or was it more like a lecture topic?
23:26:49 <camm_> It was a lecture topic followed by a series of activities to think how computing could help their community. We worked in parallel with a university in Mexico, so the students got to interact with a different culture too.
23:27:22 <darci> So cool!
23:27:41 <camm_> I'll be talking about it at the POSSE
23:28:06 <darci> I'll be looking forward to that!
23:28:21 <MarkG> Very neat. Look forwarding to hearing how those connections got made.
23:28:28 <darci> Are we ready to move on?
23:28:36 <camm_> wait
23:28:39 <darci> k
23:29:12 <camm_> MarkG, jburge & rhoyle if you could each send me a brief email about how you think you might use Ushahidi I'll start thinking about ideas for when we meet in SF
23:29:22 <camm_> cameron.macdonell@macewan.ca
23:29:23 <rhoyle> Will do.
23:29:28 <jburge> sounds good
23:29:29 <MarkG> sure thing
23:29:55 <camm_> thanks!
23:30:00 <camm_> Ok, darci, onwawrd!
23:30:04 <darci> :)
23:30:12 <darci> #topic travel plans
23:30:38 <darci> Has everyone included their travel information including airline and flight number in the spreadsheet?
23:30:52 * TheBaxter nods yes
23:30:57 <darci> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups
23:31:05 <jburge> yes
23:31:05 <darci> oops...
23:31:09 <darci> #link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NKIMzPAD4s3MDazsdk2jlLO1sJUPzoFc-Qv_slKN6H8/edit#gid=0
23:31:10 <rhoyle> I just included times, I’ll add the rest.
23:31:48 <darci> Are there any other questions about travel?
23:32:17 <jburge> landing at noon - best to go straight to Google?
23:33:22 <darci> We plan to leave the hotel at 1:30 to go to Google.
23:33:37 <MarkG> I'm driving right after class. the idea is that if I can make it the hotel before 1:30pm, I should BART over with everyone else doing the commute; otherwise, I should head straight to Google and find public parking nearby?
23:33:39 <darci> I think you might be able to get to the hotel by then.
23:33:59 <darci> MarkG: that sounds right!
23:34:08 <MarkG> thanks. =)
23:34:40 <darci> heidie: Do you know how long it takes to get from the airport to the hotel?
23:35:00 * heidie looks
23:35:08 <darci> hislopg: Or do you?
23:35:37 <hislopg> checking...
23:35:40 <heidie> Yup, about 30 minutes.
23:36:08 <darci> jburge: I think you can definitely meet us at the hotel and travel to Google with the gang!
23:36:16 <jburge> great!
23:36:31 <rhoyle> It’s Google in SF and not in Mountain View, right?
23:36:41 <darci> Correct!
23:37:39 <darci> Okay, it sounds like everyone is set to travel.
23:37:53 <heidie> Google in San Francisco is at 345 Spear St.
23:38:08 <hislopg> We'll send another email with all the local travel directions and addresses.
23:39:14 <darci> Okay, the last item on our agenda is to make sure that you have Git installed and that you have completed C.3 before arriving in SF.
23:39:35 <darci> We will be doing a git activity on the first day!
23:39:44 <rhoyle> I assume you don’t care if it’s a GUI or command line version?
23:40:13 <MarkG> darci, can the travel e-mail include a POC phone number for day-of stuff, in case we need to head right to google and need help navigating that very large Spear complex?
23:40:27 <darci> The activity provides command line instructions.
23:40:29 <MarkG> (looking at maps now, and not sure where the entrance is)
23:40:53 <heidie> It has a single entrance.
23:40:57 <darci> If you can easily convert those to the appropriate GUI commands, then it should be fine.
23:40:59 <hislopg> MarkG yes for the phone number...
23:41:01 <heidie> In the middle of the block.
23:41:16 <heidie> Dark glass doors if I remember correctly. Not too difficult to find.
23:42:02 <MarkG> ah, yes! (right behind a coke truck in google maps.) sorry, missed it the first walk of the block. thanks!
23:42:11 <camm_> rhoyle: usually the git GUI installs the command-line git as well
23:43:54 <darci> And I would add that most resources online include the command line instructions...it is probably best in the long run to become familiar with them.
23:44:27 <camm_> I would strongly encourage the use of the command-line as well
23:44:49 <MarkG> imho GUI is, frankly, much more confusing
23:45:04 <MarkG> for git (not a universal comment)
23:45:07 <darci> I've tried for some time to use git within an IDE (such as eclipse and Android studio)...I've come to the conclusion that it is easier to use the command line.
23:46:45 <darci> Is there anything else?
23:46:47 <rhoyle> …until you merge. :-)
23:47:03 <darci> lol! :)
23:48:02 <darci> Looking forward to "seeing" everyone in SF!
23:48:22 <hislopg> Thanks everyone!
23:48:41 <darci> Yes, thanks!
23:48:49 <MarkG> Thanks!
23:48:51 <darci> I'll end the meeting now.
23:49:01 * TheBaxter thanks everyone
23:49:02 <jburge> bye!
23:49:07 <darci> If there are other questions. I'll be on for a bit.
23:49:09 <darci> bye all!
23:49:14 * rhoyle waves
23:49:22 <darci> #endmeeting
