16:33:56 <hislopg> Hi Patricia_ we're just doing a roll call using #info
16:34:21 <Patricia_> #info Hi, I'm here
16:34:38 <Heidiellis> Patricia_, And what is your name and where are you from?
16:35:01 <Patricia_> #info apologies...Pat Morreale, Kean University
16:35:15 <Zhanyang> #info Zhanyang Zhang, CUNY College of Staten Island.
16:35:35 <hislopg> OK... anyone else?
16:35:45 <Heidiellis> ajan, Would you like to introduce yourself?
16:36:41 <hislopg> OK... let's move on to the next topic...
16:36:46 <hislopg> #topic Updates and Questions on POSSE stage 1 activities
16:36:59 <hislopg> How is stage 1 going for everyone?
16:37:46 <Patricia_> Going well...
16:37:57 <hislopg> We're wondering whether end of term rush is making it difficult to do the POSSE activities. Thoughts?
16:38:07 <hislopg> Patricia_: good!
16:38:29 <Patricia_> Yes, you've got it! I have note that Dec 14 is my next 'due' date for Posse Stage 2!
16:38:31 <rdomanski> I am not teaching this semester, so it's no problem.
16:38:57 <Heidiellis> rdomanski, Nice!
16:39:08 <Patricia_> I've got some colleagues also working on the POSSE activities, and we do share time-hacks in the halls!
16:39:19 <Heidiellis> ceren, How about you?
16:39:22 <Zhanyang> I am a little slow, but doing OK. I have a question on part B. How to sign up a project?
16:39:30 <Heidiellis> Patricia_, that's cool!
16:39:46 <ceren> Busy with the teaching load :)
16:40:00 <Heidiellis> ceren, Oh, I get that!
16:40:33 <hislopg> Zhanyang: that sign up is one of the next topics...
16:40:38 <Heidiellis> It would be helpful to get caught up on stage 1 activities before we meet face-to-face in NYC (which we're really looking forward to!).
16:41:14 <Heidiellis> And do feel free to reach out to me via email if you have any questions as you're going through the activities. Or any other team member.
16:42:01 <Patricia_> Thanks! I appreciate the offer of help with any questions.
16:42:18 <hislopg> We know faculty work tends to be bursty, and this is often a busy time. do what you can to keep some progress going on the HFOSS activities...
16:42:38 <Heidiellis> Sure! A large part of this effort is building community. So do reach out. We'd be happy to help.
16:42:59 <hislopg> Also, please remember to log your comments on Stage 1
16:43:17 <hislopg> #link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HvgclSLZE4f1fDrw9S7ywP6MrMsAaWjWXATQ3W7H3Wg/edit#gid=0 for logging Stage 1 comments
16:43:37 <hislopg> #topic Courses in which you plan to use HFOSS
16:43:54 <hislopg> Has anyone been thinking about where they would like to use HFOSS in their courses?
16:44:06 <Zhanyang> Can we still login some of the Part A activities even it passed the due date?
16:44:23 <Patricia_> Yes, I hope to use HFOSS in my software engineering class.
16:44:23 <kussmaul> Zhanyang: yes, of course, please do
16:45:04 <ceren> Yes, in my Health Information Technologies I and II classes.
16:45:07 <hislopg> Patricia_: SE classses are a common target for HFOSS
16:45:52 <hislopg> ceren: that will be interesting to discuss! there's a lot of health related HFOSS
16:45:58 <Zhanyang> Partricial: I am thinking to us HFOSS for the same course which I will teach in spring 2019/
16:46:17 <rdomanski> Since reading about the Sugar Labs and Shara Eden projects, and observing how there are so many ways to participate in these projects besides writing code, I was thinking of exposing students to a targeted project in a Intro level survey course.
16:46:19 <Heidiellis> Patricia_, and Zhanyang I have used HFOSS in a software engineering class.
16:46:22 <Heidiellis> #link http://mars.wne.edu/~hellis/CS490/
16:46:40 <Patricia_> Great to know! Thank you for sharing.
16:46:46 <Heidiellis> rdomanski, Yes! Great idea!
16:47:22 <Patricia_> Right now my SE class works with outside clients, from industry and non-profits, so I think HFOSS would be a great fit.
16:47:24 <ceren> #hislopg Sure. we'll discuss
16:48:21 <Heidiellis> rdomanski, Here is a link to my freshman seminar course last year where I incorporated some HFOSS
16:48:24 <Heidiellis> #link http://mars.wne.edu/~hellis/LA100/indexfa17.html
16:48:24 <hislopg> OK... this all sounds good! for the moment the most important thing is that you identify a target course...
16:48:31 <rdomanski> Question... In thinking of project ideas, what criteria is typically used in defining what constitutes a project as being "humanitarian"?
16:48:43 <rdomanski> Thanks, Heidi!
16:48:48 <hislopg> that will make the January workshop more useful for you
16:48:59 <Heidiellis> rdomanski, We use a broad umbrella to define HFOSS
16:49:34 <hislopg> the general idea of the "H" is that the project exists to address some societal problem or to better the human condition...
16:49:49 <Heidiellis> Right! ^
16:50:31 <hislopg> #topic Questions about POSSE Stage 2 Activities
16:50:35 <Heidiellis> So that includes things that range from open medical records to disaster management to mapping software when used for humanitarian purposes.
16:51:25 <hislopg> Does anyone have questions about the stage 2 workshop in January? There's a rough draft schedule posted, but we're still working on that since we usually run this over 2.5 days
16:51:26 <Heidiellis> Does anyone have questions about stage 2?
16:51:38 <Heidiellis> What we'll be doing?
16:51:44 <hislopg> This time we're going to do two full days...
16:51:55 <rdomanski> Is there a direct link to the rough draft schedule?
16:52:32 <kussmaul> http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities
16:52:39 <hislopg> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities
16:53:45 <hislopg> Expect that we'll have two very full days... with considerable time for discussion and small group work
16:54:08 <hislopg> you'll get more out of the time if you can get through the basics of the stage 1 activities
16:54:32 <hislopg> including having some idea of what you might like to do with HFOSS - e.g., a target course as we were just discussing
16:55:09 <rdomanski> Thanks. In looking it over, I think I'm still a bit unclear as to whether our purpose is more to contribute to an HFOSS project, or to learn how to teach students how to contribute to an HFOSS project?
16:55:32 <kussmaul> rdomanski: yes :-)
16:55:58 <Heidiellis> rdomanski, Right. In order to support student contributions, faculty usually need an understanding of how to contribute.
16:55:59 <kussmaul> long term goal is the latter, but the former is a useful step
16:56:13 <hislopg> rdomanski: clif's answer is accurate, but if you look at the schedule, you'll see most of the topics relate to "how to teach"
16:56:14 <Heidiellis> We've created materials that may be used by both faculty and students towards contributing.
16:56:15 <Patricia_> I'm looking forward to hearing how HFOSS was used by other faculty and learning from their experiences.
16:56:55 <hislopg> Patricia_: we spend quite a bit of time talking about what we and others have done.
16:57:46 <Patricia_> Good!
16:57:47 <hislopg> any other questions about stage 2, including logistics?
16:58:33 <hislopg> #topic Signing up for Stage 2 project and course groups
16:58:41 <hislopg> ok... let's move along!
16:58:59 <hislopg> At the stage 2 workshop we have time to work in small groups. To start to organize groups, we ask that you sign up for both a course as well as an HFOSS project that interest you.
16:59:25 <hislopg> It's not a long term commitment, but just a way to organize discussion at the workshop
16:59:40 <kussmaul> sometimes it helps to talk to people teaching the same course, other times it helps to talk to other people using the same project
16:59:52 <hislopg> For this POSSE, it looks like organizing groups by target course might be the best approach
17:00:13 <rdomanski> What might be great at the workshop would be if we all could actually identify a single project or two (as examples) and flesh out ideas for how those specific projects could be incorporated into a course, and then to actually have all of us actively contribute towards developing some materials for the student project while we are in the room together. Not "meta" descriptions about ideas, but actual implementation of them.
17:01:03 <rdomanski> The goal would be to actual have an in-the-box project assignment by the time we leave the room on the second day.
17:01:08 <rdomanski> Just a thought :-)
17:01:35 <hislopg> rdomanski: we can discuss that possibility. It's difficult to get that far in the available time, but we also have more people who know each other, and work in the same system than is usually the case
17:02:31 <hislopg> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups is the page to indicate your course and project interest
17:03:07 <hislopg> Zhanyang: did you have a question about the sign up?
17:03:20 <Zhanyang> What HFOSS project we should use for beginners? Maybe a project in its early stage that is easier to use in SE class?
17:03:59 <Zhanyang> I am just try to sign up the SE course, but didn't find a way to do it.
17:04:28 <hislopg> there's no easy answer to that! we'll discuss project selection at the workshop (and there's a stage 1 activity related to that too)
17:05:54 <hislopg> Zhanyang: go to the link above and just enter your name under a course and under a project. (you need to log in to the wiki first)
17:07:46 <Zhanyang> Thanks, I did it.
17:07:54 <hislopg> Great!
17:08:14 <hislopg> OK... any other questions or comments?
17:08:28 <hislopg> If not, we'll end the meeting
17:08:47 <Zhanyang> Looking forward to the workshop and learn from others.
17:09:08 <hislopg> The workshop is fun!
17:09:18 <hislopg> Thanks everyone!
