With Robby not here, it sorta feels like we talked about everything in person at FOSDOM.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:02:02
But let's have the meeting anyway, so everything is on the record.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:02:37
!hi
<@zodbot:fedora.im>
19:02:39
Michel Lind (salimma) - he / him / his
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:02:49
yeah having a fosdem record on the record is not a bad idea
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:02:52
uh, recap I mean
<@tdawson:fedora.im>

!topic CentOS Connect / FOSDOM recap
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:06:12
Many members of the AltImages SIG were at CentOS Connect and FOSDOM.

19:06:32
!hi
<@zodbot:fedora.im>
19:06:34
Neal Gompa (ngompa) - he / him / his
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:06:43
There was a Hyperscale and AltImages workshop / meetup.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:06:50
Hi Conan Kudo
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:07:52
Troy also gave our semi-annual presentation on what we've been doing
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:08:01

<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:08:29
I'm trying to remember what came out of the meetup and conversations.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:09:03
I do remember I agreed to try to get the new way of doing WSL going - https://pagure.io/centos-sig-alt-images/sig/issue/12
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:10:28
I'm sorta fuzzy on what we agreed on / talked about during the meetup ... most of it was hyperscale.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:10:31
happy to test once there's an image
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:11:03
I'm unhappily running Ubuntu on my ARM x13s under WSL (Debian's podman had issues on WSL for some reason)
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:11:29
I think I took notes for Hyperscale, let me see if I can find my notes to see what are Alt Images related
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:11:46
Speaking of arm, someone tried our WSL image on their older ARM laptop, but it didn't work due to hardware problems.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:12:18
The hardware was so old (I guess) it didn't do virtulization, and thus would only do WSL 1
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:14:34
nope, I did not take any notes for Alt, sorry
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:14:48
ah yeah we probably should document the minimum requirements
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:15:17
Yep, that's a good idea.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:15:38
Someone else also had a graphical problem, which turned out to be they didn't have all the right packages installed.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:16:31
should we bake in the packages needed to - say, run graphical apps?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:16:34
!info more WSL documentation is needed. Hardware requirements. Minimal package requirements for graphical packages.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:17:13
I think that's a good idea. We just have to figure out what the minimal amount is.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:17:33
for sure
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:18:10
I believe the person with the problem had just installed nautilus, which missed something. But I thought I just installed firefox and it worked ... so somewhere in between there.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:18:42
Troy really has bad luck with nautilus :)
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:19:58
OK, I've got an issue open for it - https://pagure.io/centos-sig-alt-images/sig/issue/14
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:20:43
For me, on my home desktop, it worked really well (nautilus and gnome stuff), but it was CS10, and I'd already installed the KDE desktop, so everything was pulled in.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:22:21
Talking about issues ... this past month I verified that the initial-startup stuff works. So I was going to have it be installed in our live images, just incase someone doesn't create a user.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:23:08
That will also allow us to create raw images and have the users created on bootup.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:23:13
I wonder if we should just document what the packages are
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:23:40
We could. I all depends on how much size it adds.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:23:46
I know on WSL I normally don't run GUI apps, so ... it would be nice if you can keep the small install ISO but users can easily run one commmand and be ready to run GUI
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:24:14
like making sure Fedora has a package group people can use to set up a GUI and just tell people to install that
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:24:16
We could. It all depends on how much size it adds.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:24:29
(I'm sure comps has one, I have not tested it on top of a minimal install though)
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:05
we don't have a wslg group, but it would make sense to make one
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:07
for fedora
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:14
don't think we can do that in centos though
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:29
oh I guess we could in EPEL
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:25:33
So, using Neal's idea, I was able to run Spectacle ... but when it tried doing screenshots, they were always blank. :(
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:48
there's nothing to screenshot :)
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:56
spectacle uses either the portal or the kde protocol
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:25:59
weston supports neither
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:26:10
you need to launch the full plasma desktop including kwin
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:26:14
Ya ... that's what I figured ... but, at least it came up. :)
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:26:42
I think this will let you launch Plasma: `/usr/libexec/plasma-dbus-run-session-if-needed /usr/bin/startplasma-wayland`
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:27:46
I tried that, and it acted like it launched, but nothing ever showed up ... plus nothing would show up afterwords. Meaning I stopped it, and tried basic stuff, like firefox, and they all pretended they were running, but nothing showed.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:29:07
I should try the GNOME desktop once we have the new style images
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:29:16
Not that big of a deal. Like Michel, I don't use the graphics much.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:30:19
Do we have anything else to talk about?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:31:14
I believe the silence says nope.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:31:32
I'm fine having a short meeting this month.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:31:49
yeah, time to hop on the CentOS Promo meeting :)
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:32:10
Sounds good. Talk to ya'll next month, or on the matrix channel.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
