!hi
<@zodbot:fedora.im>
19:02:33
Robby Callicotte (rcallicotte) - he / him / his
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:03:58
Hi Robby Callicotte
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:04:27
I hope you weren't without power for too long
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:04:42
I hate it when we have outages
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:04:49
No, it only was about 8 minutes
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:05:11
thats not too bad
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:05:45
My mind has a hard time figuring out how that is even a thing. It's long than a flicker, but shorter than is possible for someone to go out and fix something. But I'll take it.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:06:34
After the Texas freeze a couple of years back, I have two generators now
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:07:00
Our avg time out of power was about 4 days
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:07:08
One generator to thaw out your other generator? :)
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:07:30
haha
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:07:43
Or does it take two generators to completely power your house?
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:08:55
nah, one is an invertor generator (I've never actually used it in an outage situaton). The other is a normal style generator that plugs into our power inlet to power most of the house
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:09:10
Ah, ok.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:09:46
I would use the invertor genny to run electronics in winter time if we lost power. the other one is the "hurricane" generator
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:10:10
powers most of the houst minus the computer things
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:10:46
I'm not seeing Conan Kudo yet ... and there isn't really much I have to say, but let's get started and maybe it will be a short meeting.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:10:52
I'm here
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:10:53
!hi
<@zodbot:fedora.im>
19:10:55
Neal Gompa (ngompa) - he / him / his
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:10:59
Hi Conan Kudo
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:10:59
ah!
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:11:34
you should fix the template you have because this meeting has been called Alterative Images for a while
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:11:51
Which template?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:12:05
Oh ... yep
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:12:53
!topic Latest News
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:13:49
So, I don't really have any latest news. I haven't had a chance to work on the raw images.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:14:29
I think the only news I have is that we have hardware for risc-v ... but it's not racked yet.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:14:38
oh nice
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:14:41
there is something that you might want to poke to get backported into CentOS Stream from Fedora
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:14:54
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:15:16
this commit makes it so image descriptions don't need to carry around the sysconfig/kernel file anymore
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:15:30
and more importantly, even if you still have to, you know what actually uses it
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:15:41
oh thats cool
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:15:54
without this file, kernel updates are non-functional
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:16:26
Yep, that would be nice.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:18:03
you might want to do that backport :)
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:18:10
or ask the rhel maintainer to pull it in
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:18:33
I was going to say, I don't own grubby ... but ya, it will make the images easier.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:19:15
so grubby didn't own this file previously?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:19:43
As far as I know, nobody did
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:19:53
wow, interesting
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:20:16
It's something we put in our kiwi image configs ... which is the reason I recognize it.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:20:32
Yep
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:22:23
Anyway, yep, I'll put that on my list, but it will probrubly be a little bit (next year)
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:23:35
So, risc-v ... it's going to bet at least late January before the hardware is racked. And then the ISO sig needs to rebuild everything ...
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:24:06
But once that is done, do we want to build images? or should I say, try to build images?
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:24:23
I think we should at least make the attempt
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:24:40
Probrubly start with the Min image I guess.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:25:27
That sounds prudent. Any idea what kind of hardware it is? milk? something else?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:25:43
It would be nice if there was some type of working "desktop" hardware to test things on
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:25:57
Ya ... not milk ... just a sec ...
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:26:19
at least useful uefi seems to be more common in the riscv space than the arm one
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:26:47
I was aware of the Fedora V risc group. I think thats what they are called. Have they produced working desktops?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:26:56
Nope
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:27:03
lets pray it stays that way!
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:27:49
Well ... ok, here's the thing I didn't know until I started trying to figure out how to do a buildroot ... they keep making images (RHEL, CentOS) without any rpms.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:28:41
I have no idea how ... it hurts my head ... but when I've asked for access to their buildroots, they look at me in confusion.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:28:54
well darn
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:29:19
Anyway ... it's going to take the ISO SIG a while to build everything because we will be started from 0 rpms.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:30:00
I don't know exactly how they do the fedora ones either
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:30:59
I'm only aware of this https://riscv-koji.fedoraproject.org/koji.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:31:32
Ohh ... oh yes. I've been looking for that.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:31:35
not even sure if its really in use
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:31:49
the rawhide build target still points to f43
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:32:29
well they are building with it. just the build target mis-match
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:32:44
That's fine. If anything, I need the F42 build target, to get it close to CS10.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:34:40
Conan Kudo: when we get a risc-v repo, will kiwi do image builds for it? My mind thinks it should, but I'm not positive.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:34:45
yes
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:34:49
Cool
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:34:49
fedora riscv already does this
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:35:01
as does fedora vforce I think
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:36:27
I'm just envisioning a KDE Plasma desktop running on risc-v
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:36:34
would be very nice
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:36:43
I totally agree
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:37:11
It's still a couple years out ... but it's something I'm excited for.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:37:49
Robby Callicotte: Are you going to be at CentOS Connect / FOSDOM ?
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:38:22
Sadly no. I am bugetting for Flock tho
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:38:55
It would be good to see you, but I totally understand.
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:39:29
I'm sure we'll get to see each other at a conf next year
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:39:39
We should be having a hyperscale / AltImages workshop at CC
<@rcallicotte:fedora.im>
19:39:43
I submitted talks to LFNW etc
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:40:18
Oh cool. I'll be at LFNW ... it's sorta the one garanteed one because I pay for myself.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:41:12
Anyway ... Do we have any other AltImages stuff to talk about?
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
19:43:15
OK, I'm going to close the meeting and give us all some extra time back.
<@tdawson:fedora.im>
