<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>

<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:12:24

17:12:34
We need a decision here
<@mowest:fedora.im>
17:12:40
I'm back on. :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:12:55
mowest: 1++
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:12:57
I'm all for it but I won't be able to attend each and every meeting
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:13:05
still, 1++ for me
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:13:20
+1
<@mowest:fedora.im>
17:13:48
I'm for every week, but I will also miss a number of the meetings, but might be easier to remember to put it into my calendar if it is every week even if I have to miss some.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:14:03
Emmanuel Seyman: I think your proposal is fine to adjust the agenda respecting who dan't join a meeting
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:14:34
I think you can't join the 2nd meeting a month
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:14:56
We can take that into account.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:15:41
Well, we vote +4 / 0 / -0
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:15:53

!topic 3. Elevating Fedora Server VM distribution image
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:17:52
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:18:02
Items to discuss:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:18:02
- What we need to provide for a Change Proposal
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:18:02
- Current status
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:18:20
cooltshirtguy: I think, you are the expert here?
<@cooltshirtguy:fedora.im>
17:19:12
lol. definitely not an expert. I don't even know how that works. :)
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:21:07
IIRC, There was a recent conversation including Adam W. He was pretty adamant that he only wanted "Fedora Workstation" to be a blocking image. My memory isn't the best, so I could be wrong.
<@cooltshirtguy:fedora.im>
17:22:23
I remember something about that,.. he wanted or its currently the only blocker?
<@cooltshirtguy:fedora.im>
17:22:40
I remember something about that.. he wanted it to be or its currently the only blocker?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:23:04
I remember Adam told me we would have to elevate the VM.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:23:24
cooltshirtguy: You've produced a first draft, haven't you?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
17:24:07
I'm not sure I would like the VM image to be a blocking image. In a similar way I wouldn't want one of the "spins" to be a blocking image.
<@cooltshirtguy:fedora.im>
17:24:37
no I haven't. i remember we discussed it but I don't remember anyone taking ownership. I remember discussing samaba
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:25:32
mowest: Our goal is to promote Fedora Server in virtualized environments as a modern alternative to classic hardware.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:25:52
So we need it as a blocking deliverable
<@cooltshirtguy:fedora.im>
17:25:55
I can look it but will need some help with it. I have no idea how the process works
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:27:06
Well, I think I'm the one with the most experience in this process. So I'll make a proposal next meeting.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:27:27
(Allthough its only one)
<@mowest:fedora.im>
17:28:36
Peter Boy: Is Fedora CoreOS or Fedora Cloud considered a blocking image? If so aren't we already promoting Fedora in a VM environment, because I'm guessing those are used frequently in a VM cloud environment.
<@cooltshirtguy:fedora.im>
17:29:02
I dont mind learning new things, but honestly I've never really had any overview how things work around here.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:29:06
they are both used in VM cloud environment
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:29:12
@mowest I don't know
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:29:18
I do.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:29:26
They are both common.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:29:39
davdunc: Thanks!
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:29:53
absolutely!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:30:44
So I think we should tread server the same way. Many people asked me about Server in a VPS (i.e. not in a cloud system)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:32:09
davdunc: Do you work at Amazon or do I remember wrong?
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:32:18
I do work at Amazon. :)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:33:00
Good, I would like to ask you about available options vor VPS later
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:33:54
Take a look at Lightsail.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:34:18
that's my target for our efforts.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:34:32
KIWI builds to replace Bitnami.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:34:53
Yes, several users asked me about lightsail. And I mentioned it last Flock in Cork.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:35:11
It's very close.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:35:22
I'm working with the team.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:35:47
davdunc: Thanks!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:35:50
OK. What will we do?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:36:21
proposas: !agreed pboy will make a proposal how to proceed with Fedora Server VM
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:36:51
proposas -> proposal
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:37:01
for right now, just help us build your kiwi definition.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:37:15
we have a kiwi builder in koji.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:38:17
Yes, we discussed that some weeks ago and basically decided to switch to kiwi for images, except that releng prefers something else.
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:38:26
https://pagure.io/fedora-kiwi-descriptions
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:38:29
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:39:03
Thanks, will study those
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:39:26
cool. Look forward to unblocking anything you need for the composition.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:40:06
Yeah, I'll come back to you. I hope you will not regret to help us :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:40:16
(Must a joke)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:40:21
Just a joke
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:41:40
:) No regerts!
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:41:54
I believe Release Engineering said KIWI was fine for VM images, but they were unsure about using KIWI for .iso images. Neil Gupta responded in a ticket, that he thought KIWI could possibly generate by using a SUSE product (after packaging such in Fedora) to generate install DVD images.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:42:48
Yes, I think we should wait here and look, what's evolving. At least, I have no preferences.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:43:03
But back to the proposal:
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:43:12
John Himpel: Neal Gompta
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:43:42
I warned everyone earlier, my memory was sometime faulty :-)
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:43:44
Gompa! Oh my goodness!
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:43:53
I followed you right into the hole!
<@davdunc:fedora.im>
17:44:12
Neal Gompa -- his moniker is Conan_Kudo.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:44:36
Well, back to my proposal: !agreed pboy will make a proposal how to proceed with Fedora Server VM
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:44:46
We need to switch to the next topic!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:44:58
We are late
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:08
I see no objections to the proposal ?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:16
3
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:20
2
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:46:26
no, sounds good
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:30
OK
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:43
!agreed pboy will make a proposal how to proceed with Fedora Server VM
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:58
!topic 4. Ansible assisted installation and configuration of NFS service
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:07
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:19
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:28
Current agreements so far
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:28
- we want to synchronize our manual installation guide, the Ansible doc/guide, and the Ansible process results (i.e. Ansible should create the same as the manual doc describes).
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:28
-- Do we want to have a separate Administration guide / page?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:28
- We want to collect an alpha version in the new ansible directory of our fedora-server repository
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:28
- We want to split the current NFS draft in 2 parts: Installation and (Basic) Configuration.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:37
- Should we detail our requirements for an NFS server playbook?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:37
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:37
We probaby have to:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:37
- Discjuss and process the change of the curent NFS doc (split into installation and configuration)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:48:30
And I provided a Server Docs template
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:49:13
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:49:26
I have two ansible roles working (server & client) on F40 between different servers. I need to add one more feature (map different useri numbers between servers). Then I need to convert it to a collection. ETA two weeks.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:50:05
OK, so we should wait for this.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:50:27
We could use the time to enhance our docs draft?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:51:14
yes, good idea
<@mowest:fedora.im>
17:51:40
I like the idea of have a separate docs "Installation" and "Configuration" with a subsection under "Configuration" with "With Ansible"
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:52:44
What is the url for the Fedora Server repo, so that I can post Work In Progress and "Final" version for others to see and review?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
17:52:48
Then we could have NFS with Ansible, Samba with Ansible, Webserver with Ansible, Podman Containers with Ansible...
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:53:39
John Himpel: stg is https://docs.stg.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-server/services/filesharing-nfs-installation/
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:53:58
There is no public version in main yet.
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:54:08
That's for docs. Where should I put ansible code.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:54:31
mowest: Yes, that the Goal.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:55:06
John Himpel: https://pagure.io/fedora-server/tree/main
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:55:25
Therin fedora-ansible with some subdirs
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:57:18
Question: My role currently assumes userid info is kept in /etc/passwd. Should I have options for that info stored in LDAP and/or FreeIPA?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:58:27
I suspect this would be useful
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
17:59:33
I am not familiar with PAM, so I suspect I would need some assistance with that part.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:59:33
I'm not seeing the consequences at the moment. So I can'tg say anything here
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:00:17
Note that we can always add that part later. Ours docs are not set in stone.
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:00:46
I'll finish what I have and we can discuss "add-ons" later.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:01:27
OK, so back to docs for a short time
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:01:36
I have written the current NFS docs draft. Someone else should do the revision, I think.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:01:45
Who will start to split the current draft in to installation and configuration?
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:02:38
I'm not an author, but I can at least add bullet points and some text. It may be a couple of weeks before I can make much progress there.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:03:18
John Himpel: That would be perfectly OK.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:03:43
Someone else to support the review / reworking?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:04:46
I'll be glad to help
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:05:05
Emmanuel Seyman: ++1
<@zodbot:fedora.im>
18:05:10
pboy gave a cookie to eseyman. They now have 15 cookies, 1 of which were obtained in the Fedora 40 release cycle
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:06:47
I will take a look at the docs too, I'm working on getting a new machine up and running for doc editing for when I go to flock. I have Fedora installed, and one of the next steps will be to set up the local writing environment. I can take a look at server docs then.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:46
mowest: Very good. Maybe we can use your experience to improve the docs about how to contribute to Fedora Server Docs.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:08:02
mowest: ++1
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:08:30
Well I think we are done for now. I switch to Open Floor
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:08:44
!topic 5. Open Floor
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:08:55
Registration for Flock is now open.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:09:33

<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:09:50
Yes, don't miss the opportunity!
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:10:28
I'm arriving on the 6th and staying until the 11th
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:11:11
My tickets are not fixed, yet. But I think, it's the same for me.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:12:00
I'm arriving on the 6th and heading back home after Saturday's sessions, might need to scoot out in the afternoon sometime to head back home.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:12:20
So that would be 6-10
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:12:50
Well I hope we have a lot of opportunities to meet and to "socialize" :)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:13:04
We are overdue and should end the meeting now.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:13:20
Anything left last minute?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:13:26
yes, I need to go hunt for food...
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:13:43
I typed and ate at the same time :-)
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:13:48
is there a schedule of presentation yet for flock?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:13:49
I probably won't be at next week's meeting
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:14:22
talks have been approved/denied but I don't know about a schedule
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:14:51
OK, see you next week (besides Emmanuel)
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:14:59
bye
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:15:11
I'm off. I will post the minutes to the list later tonight
