!topic Fedora 42 status, Beta test dates / plan
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:12:36
!info 42 is broadly stable ATM, kernel 6.14 is maturing, KDE 6.3 landed, GNOME folks are working on landing GNOME 48
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:12:43
anyone have any notes/issues with 42?
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:14:19
I've been testing F42 on my laptop. For some reason, the latest kernel reintroduced an previous problem: On resume, the LCD backlight seems to be going out. AMD [d/i]gpu btw.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:14:41
Not as bad as previously though. But that problem seems to be back to some degree
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:14:57
No issues yet myself
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:14:59
oh, that's unfortunate...have you checked https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues ? fortunately amd is one of the upstream kernel bits with a sane issue tracker
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:15:11
so there might be an issue there...if not, you could file one
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:15:42
yeah I'll have to look into it
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:15:55
Hopefully it might get more widely reported once we get in beta
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:16:06
It might be a "me" thing too
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:16:41
i haven't noticed it on my amd laptop, but i'm still on 6.14.0-0.rc1.15.fc42.x86_64
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:16:46
i should update
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:17:24
Yeah in my case, it happens when I resume from standby. Mostly when it's unplugged from power.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:17:54
lmc if I can't make a quick video
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:17:56
ah, i don't unplug mine often
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:18:06
hi kamil
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:20:18
so yeah, just to give folks a heads up about dates
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:20:31
!info F42 beta freeze and updates-testing activation are tomorrow, then early target release date is march 11
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:21:44
Not sure if its still a backlight issue or something else tbh
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:22:24
#info there are a few proposed blockers and FEs at https://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/milestone/42/beta/buglist , please vote if you can - sorry about 2330681 being broken
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:22:24
so you unplugged *while* it was suspended? i wonder if that's related
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:22:24
does it also happen if you suspend/resume entirely on battery?
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:22:38
Lemme see
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:22:56
Hmm, I have not seen this on any of my two AMD laptops before, I guess, I will have to start paying attention and unplug more.
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:23:20
For me, F42 works normally for everything I do on everyday basis.
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:24:16
Same F42 KDE
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:24:17
Yeah unplugging while it's on does nothing, seemingly. Lemme check something though, before it had something to do with the power profiles
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:24:50
Ill have to find another machine to test and make sure Steve
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:27:03
adamw: might be a KDE/amdgpu thing. I have my laptop set to go in Power Saver mode when it's on battery, and otherwise, be on performance mode. The switch might be causing the issue.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:27:22
i.e. if it's plugged in on suspend, but unplugged before resume
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:27:47
I am using Balanced and never switch off when plugged, just on battery.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:28:58
Are you on KDE? If so, try the following:
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:28:58
3- Remove from power, and open the lid.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:28:58
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:28:58
For me, that seems to cause the screen to tilt, and often to just plain go out
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:28:58
2- Plug it in, and close the lid.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:28:58
1- Set the power profile while plugged in to Performance, and the power profile while on battery to Battery Saver.
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:29:45
I am on Gnome, but I can install KDE tomorrow and have a try.
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:30:26
Yeah I have another AMD Thinkpad here. Ill try by tomorrow
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:31:01
thanks folks

!topic Test Day / community event status
<@bittin:matrix.org>
16:31:48
WSL test day going on atm for people with Windows 11 and the dnf5 gnome-software one just ended today
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:31:51
there's a WSL test day scheduled for today - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2025-02-17_WSL
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:31:59
so please help test that if you can (I think you might need windows)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:32:20
!info WSL test day is today (that's Fedora support for Windows' run-Linux-on-Windows thing), take part if you can - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2025-02-17_WSL
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:32:48
adamw: oh, another issue I noticed... the upgrade from F41 to F42 screen is broken. You know when you reboot and you'd usually get "Upgrade in progress do not turn off your system" screen? It just shows a spinning wheel with a quickly scrolling list of packages.
<@patricklang:fedora.im>
16:32:56
re: WSL - yeah, this needs Windows 11 with virtualization support so some VMs may not be applicable
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:33:17
I'll try it on my X1E laptop
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:33:25
(arm64)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:35:19
Steve Cossette [Farchord] hmm, i just checked the video of a recent openQA upgrade test and it looks OK there
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:35:27
https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/3229068/file/video.webm
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:36:16
Yes. I have seen it, too.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:36:18
Derek Enz: said he had the same thing in #kde:fedoraproject.org
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:36:34
Yes. I have seen it, too. On Gnome.
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:36:52
You mean the white screen?
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:37:02
No the lack of a plymouth upgrade screen
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:37:20
Neal said this was most likely to do with dnf5, I did fill a ticket
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:37:27
Hmm I do not recall
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:37:39
well hey, looks like playing videos still crashes *this* AMD laptop. heh.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:38:38

<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:41:00
so, everybody file your AMD bugs until poor mario limoncello quits
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:41:09
so, everybody file your AMD bugs until poor mario limonciello quits
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:41:12
Hahahahaha XD
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:41:25
I'm gonna learn ballpoint soldering and switch my GPU from AMD to nvidia.
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:41:58
(fat chance of that)
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:42:21
But I suspect we'll get more reports once the test days go live
<@derekenz:fedora.im>
16:44:22
So its confirmed here that both f42 Gnome and KDE on AMD. No Intel yet?
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:46:06
I have one laptop with Intel but I believe that the upgrade process behaved normally, I cannot recall. And I have not seen the screen off issue on that either.
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:47:05
I have upgraded like 6 machines to F42 and besides some dependency issue I had with the packages, I have not noticed anything much interesting.
<@boniboyblue:fedora.im>
16:48:16
I have a ThinkPad with Intel Iris that done the same but if I'm honest, I thought it was normal to didn't report.
<@boniboyblue:fedora.im>
16:48:29
I have a ThinkPad with Intel Iris that done the same but if I'm honest, I thought it was normal so didn't report.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:50:10
the 'verbose' screen should appear if you hit esc
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:50:17
but by default you should get the 'pretty' bootsplash-y one
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:50:25
esc should toggle between the two, in fact
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:53:09
well, sometimes you get a bootsplashy windows like, and sometimes you get the bootsplashy package listing one - besides the framebuffer one
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:53:24
oh, hmm
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:53:36
that does sound like a bug...not sure if it's plymouth or what
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:54:31
what Steve Cossette [Farchord] showed in his photo is exactly the second type, you have a spinning wheel and above it, there is one line that shows the XXXX/YYYY package name stuff
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:55:19
the framebuffery just lists packages each one on extra line moving stuff forward, like a log behaves.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:55:22
oh, yeah, one package at a time status update is nromal
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:55:32
and yeah, that sounds wrong
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:55:42
does seem worth a bug report to plymouth
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:57:15
alrighty, we're nearly out of time...
