16:37:28
Hey, fifofonix do you have any inputs about this action item from the last meeting? - Verify with fifofonix if there is consensus (1.28 cluster with zswap), that checking the `--flag` is useful/relevant
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:38:18
Right, so people wanted me to try the flag (not actually --flag) and I updated the issue indicating that with the necessary options 1.28 workers do seem to work without issues with zram.
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:38:56
So, 1.28 doesn't work with zram unless you configure kubelet per links in the git issue.
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:39:04
But with the kubelet config it works.
<@jbtrystram:matrix.org>
16:40:13
fifofonix: out of curiosity, how was configured ZRAM ?
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:40:50
Default configuration via FAQ for Zram. Verified it was active via zramctl or similar
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:41:00
fifofonix: thanks for testing that! so it sounds like as is, turning on swap in FCOS would break k8s.
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:41:07
Default configuration via FAQ for Zram, ie. applied to workers as ignition. Verified it was active via zramctl or similar
<@siosm:matrix.org>
16:41:29
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:41:51
so we can't turn it on without providing a generous heads up, and provide additional info on how to either disable it in FCOS, or enable the feature in k8s
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:42:09
v1.28 yes, without some mods. that isn't the new news. we knew that from last time around. new news is that with recommended config changes kubelets work with v1.28. All as expected I think per documentation.
<@siosm:matrix.org>
16:45:20
agree, we'll have to announce it and wait a bit before doing it
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:45:21
fifofonix, do you also understand from https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker/issues/859#issuecomment-2007630492 that in v1.30, the kubelet would no longer fail to start with the default kubelet config?
<@fifofonix:matrix.org>
16:46:20
That is how I read it, but I claim no expertise or deep understanding in this area. I was just responding to a very specific test request (and I happened to be running v1.28)
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
16:47:20
Jonathan Lebon: let's ask that question explicitly to that person in the ticket? i.e. in 1.30 you won't need to provide `--fail-swap-on=false` correct?
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:48:10
dustymabe: agreed
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:50:34
i think we can move on to the topics?
<@ydesouza:fedora.im>
16:51:08
Nice, so let's go! We have a few topics today.
<@ydesouza:fedora.im>

16:52:56
I saw that dustymabe added the meeting label 2 weeks ago in the issue. Any insights about it?
<@siosm:matrix.org>
16:54:17
I'd say that folks interested in contributing / joining a CNCF group could take a look at this.
<@siosm:matrix.org>
16:54:31
I don't think there are any specific action to take here.
<@siosm:matrix.org>

<@siosm:matrix.org>
16:56:41

16:56:46
Let's do https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker/issues/1575 instead as it's more pressing
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:57:08
i feel weird pursuing this when we don't really have a fleshed out story on how to install k8s on FCOS. yes, there are other things that build on top of FCOS that do, but we've been pretty isolated from those.
<@siosm:matrix.org>
16:57:38
Note that the CNCF is not only K8s :)
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
16:58:03
that's fair :)

<@ydesouza:fedora.im>
17:00:05
Ok, so lets have 1575 for the next topic
<@ydesouza:fedora.im>
17:00:08
!topic F39 drops some firmware packages that provide wifi/BT firmware !link https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker/issues/1575
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:01:21
I guess I can intro this one again
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:01:21
So, did we make any progress since last week?
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:01:25
we did discuss it last week
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:01:50
travier: was there an action item?
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:02:11
Last week we did not reach a conclusion on what to do
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:02:34
right. we did not
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:02:34
I'd say that we either need to remove all firmware for F40 or include the missing ones.
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:02:43
but I don't think it was for lack of information
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:02:58
travier: I think I agree with you
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:03:22
lack of consensus :)
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:03:37
TL;DR some wifi firmware got dropped in F39. At that time we said we'd delay actually dropping it out of FCOS until F40 and warn users first.
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:03:40
The easiest path is to add the missing ones for F40
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:03:50
that 2nd part didn't happen
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:04:00
and now more wifi firmware has been dropped out of F40
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:04:31
my proposal is that we add the newly dropped wifi firmware back to FCOS and then finally execute the initial plan of warn + drop in the next release
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:04:59
the alternate proposal is to drop all wifi firmware now in F40 maybe with some sort of coreos-status post
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
17:05:51
i think if it was before the next rebase, it'd be less weird to do this in f40. feels a bit too late now
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:06:21
Or we could say that we drop them in 3 months time
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
17:07:10
i think that'd be better, yeah. in theory, FCOS users shouldn't have to think in terms of Fedora releases anyway :)
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:08:05
I agree with that ^^ - though it would be nice to have it roll out in `next` for a period of time first.. and we're better at doing that around major rebases
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:09:12
to me it's more work to keep `next-devel` open just for that
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:09:14
The firmwares are a really hard set of packages to track as they change names frequently
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:09:22
but I'm happy with that approach too
<@jlebon:fedora.im>
17:09:59
fine either way too
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:10:14
> The firmwares are a really hard set of packages to track as they change names frequently yeah? I feel like the reason we are having issues now is just because they are breaking them out into subpackages, but they won't break the subpackages into subpackages will they?
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:10:52
OK, let's add them back for the F40 release, then we can plan for a removal with a 3 months warning and a potential CLHM helper
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:10:57
OK, let's add them back for the F40 release, then we can plan for a removal with a 3 months warning and a potential CLHM helper?
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:12:11
WFM - maybe in the wording of the proposal we can leave it open ended on if that gets rolled out with F41 or in the middle of F40.. at least in the initial work we can include the manifest list conditional on <F41
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:13:06
I think the bigger question for me here is.. can we find someone to own this so it doesn't drop on the floor again? perferrably someone other than travier Jonathan Lebon or myself
<@dustymabe:matrix.org>
17:13:59
and by "own" I mean you ask people about it periodically until we've all worked together and it's implemented :) the actual implementation should be easy IMO
<@siosm:matrix.org>
17:14:10
(I'm currently doing the firmware addition PR for F40)
<@jbtrystram:matrix.org>
17:16:30
