first, an update: we've now added a new container-native path for building FCOS in https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-config/pull/3348

There's a lot of negotiation going on within the CNCF at the moment. We can certainly have a Matrix space of our own, but there will always be a space where the CNCF is, and I recommend avoiding that fractured community as much as we can, unfortunately. So I'd recommend waiting to see what the CNCF does.
