18:11:42 #startmeeting 18:11:42 Meeting started Fri Jan 16 18:11:42 2015 UTC. The chair is Darci. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot. 18:11:42 Useful Commands: #action #agreed #halp #info #idea #link #topic. 18:11:55 #topic Updates 18:12:22 So what has everyone been up to? kwurst, do you want to go first? 18:12:29 Ok. 18:13:26 At this week’s OpenMRS developers meeting, there was a discussion of trying to keep dependcies up to dat. 18:13:29 date. 18:13:51 They decided that they are using a very out of date version of hibernate. 18:14:24 They suggested that it might be a good project for an outside group to try to update the version of hibernate. 18:14:43 I’m currently thinking about whether my class could do this for our semester project. 18:15:06 I’ve been bouncing the idea off stoney and he thinks it’s a good idea. 18:15:31 sure… throw me under the bus 18:15:39 lol 18:15:39 So, my next step is to talk to the project leads and see if this is something they’d be interested in having us do. 18:15:43 What is your class about? 18:16:31 And, whether they are willing to assign one of the full-time developers to be “product owner” and help us decide what the priorities should be for the tasks. 18:16:46 smoussavi: This is a software development capstone course. 18:17:04 I have 12 seniors who are supposed to be working on a semester-long project. 18:17:12 Then I agree with Stoney:) 18:17:21 I think that’s it for now. 18:18:04 wuhoo! now I’m not the only one under the bus 18:18:07 I agree with stoney too! It sounds like it would be an engaging project, especially if you have a full-time developer to work with. 18:18:32 Yes, well that’s the question - will they be willing to do that? 18:18:46 rubyK: how about you? 18:21:11 Nothing much after initial converstations with Chris. My plan is to have a student work with me over the summer to map the design and architecture of the OpenMRS android app 18:22:22 I told Chris I would share his updates with the group; this is from the email that he sent 18:22:28 I listened in on the OpenMRS developer's forum last Thursday but had to get off the call after about 30 minutes. They hadn't gotten to the release plan by the time I left, but from the notes it doesn't seem like they said much about the Android app. 18:22:42 I plan on reaching out to the Android app lead soon about getting a student or two involved with that. 18:22:53 Last, this semester I'm still planning on using the assignment that we developed in Raleigh. I haven't yet modified the wiki page but will start working on that in early Feb. 18:23:45 smoussavi: how about you? 18:23:50 The developer call has scheduled topics, and generally if something is not on the agenda, it won’t be discussed. They usually run out of time... 18:24:29 kwurst: is the agenda public? 18:24:49 Yes, I’ll hunt it down and post the URL (hold on…) 18:25:54 I have not done much last semester, but am planning to use basic exercises this semester. 18:26:11 kwurst: may be my class can help with part of it, if there is some focused section that can be developed separately and then integrated. 18:26:30 The list of upcoming topics is at the bottom of this page: http://wiki.openmrs.org/display/RES/Developers+Forum 18:27:55 kwurst: Thanks! I'll share this info with Chris 18:28:23 If you want to suggest topics, they have “topic fest” every three months. The next on is April 2nd. 18:29:06 #info The list of upcoming topics is at the bottom of this page: http://wiki.openmrs.org/display/RES/Developers+Forum 18:29:17 #info If you want to suggest topics, they have “topic fest” every three months. The next on is April 2nd. 18:30:12 smoussavi: I’ll keep your class in mind, but I’m not sure how that might work (yet…) 18:30:41 I guess I'm next... 18:30:51 Yes, of course. 18:31:05 #info the topics for the upcoming meeting are usually sent out in an email at the beginning of the week. 18:31:41 For those of you at the last POSSE: we talked about my intro homework assignment on open source. 18:32:03 I've done a bit of updating and made it available to you on Dropbox. 18:32:17 You should have gotten an invitation to the folder. 18:33:02 #info Introductory open source homework assignment available on Dropbox. All feedback greatly appreciated! 18:33:15 Darci: I don't recall receiving invitation for dropbox. Could you please resend? 18:33:23 I got it. 18:33:31 (minutes ago…) 18:33:33 I just sent it a few minutes ago... 18:34:07 I got it .. i am in 18:34:13 I got it now, thanks 18:34:44 kwurst: you asked last time about the data structures assignment; I've placed it in the same Dropbox folder, along with feedback from Jeff Ward and Patti. 18:35:12 I had done some updating, but if you recall I lost my flashdrive at the end of summer and that work was lost. 18:35:48 I did finally take the time to locate the most recent version and find the updates that Patti and Jeff had suggested, now I need to incorporate them again. 18:36:06 As before, all feedback is greatly appreciated! 18:36:31 The other thing people may be interested in: They’re making an effort to bring back the OpenMRS University meetings on Wednesdays. 18:36:45 #link http://wiki.openmrs.org/display/RES/OpenMRS+University 18:36:50 #info draft version of the data structures assignment is also on Dropbox, along with feedback from two POSSE alum 18:37:45 #info the list of topics is on that page. Some are open Q&A sessions, some are specific topics. 18:38:09 I plan to make a more concerted effort this semester to include a series of homework assignments in my CS2 (and hope to get other faculty to use them as well) 18:38:33 Last Wednesday’s was very useful - a discussion of the difference between OpenMRS Platform and OpenMRS standalone. 18:39:43 kwurst: do you know why they stopped doing the OpenMRS University meetings? 18:39:51 #link recording of a discussion of the difference between OpenMRS Platform and OpenMRS standalone: https://connect.iu.edu/p2fjz4d1o6d/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal 18:40:32 They never really stopped, but they were not well attended because they were mostly Q&A sessions, and no one showed up with questions. 18:40:56 This last time they had an announced topic, and a lot of people showed up. 18:41:12 Does the same person always run the meeting? 18:41:37 When they thanked so many people for showing up, I suggested that it was because there was an announced topic. I’m going to do the same on the developers list. 18:42:07 Darci: They did assign someone new for this year(?) who is going to try to make them more popular. 18:42:55 Do you have a name? 18:43:42 Are the two names on top an indication of who is running it? 18:43:56 Darci: Matthew Ssemakadde ssemakadde@gmail.com 18:45:16 It looks like you can suggest topics on an etherpad - there's a link at the bottom. 18:45:33 or add them as comments to the page. 18:45:48 kwurst: thanks! 18:45:57 Oh, cool! I guess I never scrolled down that far :) 18:46:22 Darci: the files you put on dropbox is very useful. I will work on the data structure one and add comments. 18:46:41 Is anyone else teaching a CS2 or data structures course? 18:47:03 Everyone should really subscribe to the developers email listserv, if for nothing other than the announcements of meeting topics. I know that there’s lots of email, but I just ignore whole threads that I’m not interested in. 18:47:19 Darci: In the Fall I’m teaching data structures. 18:47:36 I teach it in the fall as well 18:48:06 smoussavi: fyi...the data structures assignment will be used in my CS2 class. 18:48:26 We teach a 3 semester sequence: CS1, CS2, and then data structures. 18:48:38 We do too. 18:48:49 Our CS2 is really an introductory data structures course. 18:48:50 I ‘m going have to go soon. Stoney has to kick me out of his house, so he can go to an appointment. 18:49:08 okay...thanks for all the info! 18:49:13 Bye. 18:49:17 bye@ 18:49:21 Bye 18:49:23 bye! 18:50:11 smoussavi: maybe we can work on other assignments that can be used in CS2/data structures? 18:50:50 I'll continue to put the ones I'm developing on Dropbox and share them with the group. 18:51:23 Darci: yes, that would be great. I teach programming 2 that has a few basic data structures, data structures, and software design. 18:51:37 rubyK: my Android class starts next week, so I'll be looking again at the materials I have. You should be getting something soon! 18:52:34 Darci: are you going to be sharing the Android ones with everyone as well? 18:54:00 Great ! Thank you Darci . I will be redesgining my Into to Software Development course during the summer to focus on Android development 18:54:06 The Android stuff is not related to OpenMRS, although I may look at trying to use the OpenMRS Android app in my class...we'll see. So, I'm not sure. 18:55:27 Okay, it's getting close to 2:00. Does anyone have anything else? 18:55:57 No. When is the next meeting? 18:56:34 We are scheduled for Friday, February 13. 18:56:59 Sounds good .. 18:57:02 Does that date still work? 18:57:08 yes 18:57:19 Great! 18:57:55 Have either of you thought more about putting in a proposal? 18:58:19 for? 18:58:35 I have a very heavy teaching load this semester. I can do something over the summer if any one is intrested in collaboration. 18:58:39 If you recall we have funding support for faculty to develop activities. 18:59:29 oh, I forgot about that. When is it due? 18:59:38 rubyK: do you think you and Chris might collaborate over the summer? 19:00:21 smoussavi: there is no particular due date, but our grant end August 31, although we may request an extension. 19:00:54 #info Instructor Support Information is available at http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Funding_Support_for_Instructors 19:00:59 ok. I will think about it. 19:01:12 Great! 19:01:17 why not! I will mention it to him and see how it goes 19:01:36 This sounds good! :) 19:02:04 Okay...anything else? 19:02:12 Not for now. 19:03:27 I'll end the meeting then...it was great to talk to everyone! 19:03:38 take care. Bye. 19:03:45 bye! 19:03:53 #endmeeting
