!info #185: Evaluate if we can have ibus-chewing as default IME for Taiwan (pwu)
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:24:08
https://pagure.io/i18n/issue/185
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:24:57
any update here pwu
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:25:39
I think Kan-Ru Chen recently updated ibus-chewing to 2.0?
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:26:01
I think Kan-Ru Chen recently updated Fedora ibus-chewing to 2.0?
<@pwu:fedora.im>
08:26:10
I think we can compare ibus-libzhuyin with ibus-chewing 2.0.
<@pwu:fedora.im>
08:26:26
If ibus-chewing 2.0 is packaged in Fedora.
<@kanru:wara.tw>
08:27:08
Thanks, Jens Petersen I pushed ibus-chewing 2.0 to rawhide.
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:27:56
It might be okay to push it to F40 too?
<@pwu:fedora.im>
08:28:33
Do you plan to update it in Fedora 39?
<@kanru:wara.tw>
08:29:43
I only updated F39 and F40 with a small bug fix. The change in 2.0 is quite large (gtk4 and tray icon) but functional wise it's almost the same so I don't feel we need to rush.
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:30:03
We could even have a test day for F41 perhaps
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:30:36
Anyway I agree it would be nice to test more and compare the IMEs
<@pwu:fedora.im>
08:31:01
Agreed
<@kanru:wara.tw>
08:31:48
Sure, I'm also actively working on libchewing so the tests would also provide valuable feedback regarding features to priortize :)
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:32:02
It could also be discussed on Discourse
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:32:10
Great!
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:32:30
It could also be discussed on Fedora Discourse
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:32:46
What are next steps for this ticket then?
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:33:08
One problem we often face with these Changes is lack of community feedback
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:34:45
The more consensus there is around the Change the better
<@kanru:wara.tw>
08:34:51
I can help broadcast the message to TW community (at least to the places I'm aware)
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:35:06
That would be fantastic
<@pwu:fedora.im>
08:35:33
Cool
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:37:51
paragan: I think enough to summarise today's discussion
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:38:04
Thanks
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:38:07
let's move
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:38:19
!topic Open Floor
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:38:29
anything to discuss here?
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:38:45
I have a topic in mind
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:39:42
I have been thinking if we need a tool for installing and removing langpacks and default-fonts and other i18n config?
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:40:30
But it's not entirely clear to me
<@kanru:wara.tw>
08:41:17
Currently it seems gnome software automatically installs some? Not sure on other desktop.
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:41:33
For example it's a bit hard to remove default-fonts currently, but we could install less top metapkgs perhaps as a workaround?
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:41:49
Kan-Ru Chen: you are right
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:42:16
and actually our default desktop coverage is quite good
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:42:34
Containers or Toolbox is different of course
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:43:21
Another "use-case" could be CJK rendering priority for example, though it could also be handled otherwise perhaps
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:44:02
Overall our approach is quite different to Ubuntu, which has long had a language tool
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:44:18
Thoughts, comments?
<@tagoh:matrix.org>
08:46:01
dunno if that situation is really improved by tool. that is actually rpm/dnf issue. if it can be improved there, that would be better.
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:46:13
Whether a tool is more "discoverable" than metapkgs is also debatable certainly - nvm I still feel there can be value even as an experiment
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:47:04
tagoh: perhaps we should do something, even for F40, the current removal behaviour is probably suboptimal
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:47:54
I could open a big for that
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:48:03
I could open a bug for that
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:48:53
I already have one bug open https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2237646
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:48:58
Whether a tool is more "discoverable" than metapkgs is also debatable certainly - nevertheless I still feel there can be value even as an experiment
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:49:07
Great
<@juhp:matrix.org>
08:49:54
Ah yes
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:54:20
anything more to discuss here?
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:55:31
I assume no further discussion happening here
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:55:36
Let's close this meeting then
<@paragan:matrix.org>
08:55:45
