19:02:42 <zodbot> The meeting name has been set to 'introductions'
19:02:55 <heidie> And.... clearly, one needs to provide a topic when one starts a meeting :-)
19:03:04 <hislopg> Hi everyone!
19:03:15 <heidie> The agenda for this meeting is here:
19:03:17 <heidie> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_1#Agenda
19:03:36 <heidie> The first item on our agenda is introductions.
19:03:46 <heidie> Just a name and institution is fine. I'll start.
19:03:59 <wdt> Hi!
19:04:02 <heidie> I'm Heidi Ellis and I'm a prof at Western New England University and a member of the foss2serve team.
19:04:38 <heidie> Lets go alphabetically.
19:04:46 <heidie> hillsma, Can you go next?
19:04:52 <hillsma> Sure. I’m Mark Hills, I’m a prof at East Carolina University.
19:04:59 <heidie> Great!
19:05:19 <heidie> hislopg?
19:05:56 <heidie> hislopg is Greg Hislop from Drexel University and also a member of the foss2serve team.
19:06:04 <heidie> He may be "away".
19:06:27 <heidie> ktstolee?
19:06:32 <ktstolee> Hi, I’m Katie Stolee, a prof at North Carolina State University
19:06:46 * hislopg I'm here...
19:06:57 <heidie> Go ahead hislopg
19:07:08 <hislopg> you've covered it! :-)
19:07:17 <heidie> :-) I do like working with this team!
19:07:26 <heidie> lintqueen_gina, Are you available to introduce yourself?
19:08:11 <heidie> lintqueen_gina, is an Education outreach person from Red Hat who you'll meet in Raleigh.
19:08:12 <hislopg> how about lorip?
19:08:16 <lorip> I'm Lori Postner. I teach at Nassau Community College in Long Island, NY. I'm a member of the foss2serve team.
19:08:39 <heidie> Quaid? Do you want to introduce yourself?
19:09:06 <hislopg> Karsten Wade is another Red Hat person... perhaps not currently available..
19:09:20 * heidie Thinks that there are some folks like myself who hang out on this channel all day and so using their "nick" notifies them that they're being talked to.
19:09:43 <heidie> sheckman, ?
19:10:00 <sheckman> Hi, I'm Sarah Heckman from NC State
19:10:07 <hislopg> Hi Sarah :-)
19:10:24 <heidie> Hi Sarah!
19:10:32 <heidie> wdt?
19:10:33 <wdt> Hi, Wesley Turner, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
19:10:51 <heidie> And zodbot is our meetbot.
19:11:15 <hislopg> Is anyone new to IRC?
19:11:53 <heidie> I'm going to make hislopg also a chair.
19:11:56 <hillsma> I’ve used it, but not much for a long time, most of the time I use Slack
19:11:59 <heidie> #chair hislopg
19:11:59 <zodbot> Current chairs: heidie hislopg
19:12:12 <heidie> Ah, yes, the Slack debate.
19:12:23 <heidie> Slack is great, but has a bit more overhead than IRC.
19:12:30 <wdt> Mostly Slack in the last few years, but I imagine I will remember.:-)
19:12:45 <hislopg> We're noticing a lot of answers like that - Slack is clearly overlapping with IRC!
19:12:48 <heidie> And there is a strong culture in many FOSS projects to use IRC. That seems to be changing a bit.
19:13:03 <heidie> Yes, I've encountered projects that use both.
19:13:08 <ktstolee> I’m definitely new to IRC
19:13:19 <heidie> Welcome ktstolee!
19:13:22 <sheckman> Me too! But I like learning new tools.
19:13:27 <heidie> :-)
19:13:55 <heidie> OK, so I'm going to change the topic to "Basic IRC Features"
19:14:01 <heidie> #topic "Basic IRC Features"
19:14:34 <heidie> The culture around IRC is similar to conversations around the water cooler.
19:14:52 <heidie> Most folks sign in and hang out on a channel and only interact when they either need something or someone pings them.
19:15:31 <heidie> The names of the users are known as "nicks" and when you type someone's nick, the IRC client typically lets them know somehow.
19:15:37 <heidie> Might be a screen flash or a beep.
19:15:55 <heidie> In this way, you only need to pay attention to those things related to you.
19:16:34 <heidie> What questions do folks have about IRC?
19:17:02 <darci> heidie: You are awesome!
19:17:22 <heidie> :-) Thanks!
19:17:50 <darci> mhills: Nice nick!
19:18:02 * mhills making sure I remember the proper commands
19:18:35 * darci smiling
19:18:40 <hislopg> mhills: good! Everyone - feel free to try out some commands...
19:18:40 <mhills> darci: Thanks!
19:19:02 * heidie smiles and nods
19:19:14 * wdt wave
19:19:28 * darci waves back!
19:21:13 <heidie> Note that you can also register your nick.
19:21:27 <heidie> I'm now "heidie" because there is a "heidi" registered on freenode.
19:21:54 <heidie> If I sign on as heidi, which I can only do if the other "heidi" is not on, I sometimes get messages meant for her.
19:22:39 <wdt> My problem too, apparently. :-)
19:22:51 <heidie> Any further questions on how IRC works?
19:23:29 <mhills> Not right now. I remember seeing instructions to register nicks, so I’ll look at those.
19:24:03 <heidie> OK, moving on...
19:24:10 <heidie> #topic "HFOSS Projects"
19:24:36 <heidie> One of the goals of POSSE is to get folks started in an HFOSS project.
19:24:48 <heidie> Are there any questions about projects?
19:26:14 <wdt> I am advising an Opensource group here at RPI, basically mentoring a number of projects in FOSS. Do I need a separate HFOSS project as well?
19:26:43 <heidie> Isn't the RPI group focused on projects that "do good"?
19:26:58 <mhills> I’ve read info on the projects, but haven’t look at the repos yet. Do they maintain some sort of TODO list of things that need to be added (e.g., GitHub enhancement issues), or would we need to do something like hop onto IRC and just ask about what needs to be done?
19:27:36 <wdt> We encourage, but do not require, HFOSS.
19:27:37 <lorip> mhills: it is best to start with the issue tracker
19:27:45 <mhills> I’ve mainly been a contributor on smaller projects where I know the people involved, or projects that I’ve forked on GitHub and that had few committers, hence the question.
19:27:47 <hislopg> mhills: that varies somewhat by project. The better projects try to keep a list of things that are particularly identified for new contributors
19:27:52 <mhills> Okay, thanks.
19:28:03 <mhills> (For both replies!)
19:28:15 <heidie> In the past, POSSE alums have had success with OpenMRS and Ushahidi.
19:28:16 <wdt> None of them were on the list in the introductory material
19:28:18 <lorip> projects keep a list of bugs & feature - some tag them for newbies which is really helpful!
19:28:19 <hislopg> mhills: working with a project where you get to know someone is a great way to approach this
19:28:59 <mhills> agreed
19:29:06 <ktstolee> I’m rather interested in using Ushahidi for two courses in software testing to be offered in the Spring
19:29:52 <hislopg> wdt: we can discuss this, but I don't see an issue with what RPI is doing and what we do at POSSE
19:30:01 <wdt> Cool
19:30:29 <heidie> ktstolee, We have a POSSE alum and colleague from Canada who likes to help folks get up to speed in Ushahidi
19:30:43 <heidie> ktstolee, Cam Macdonnel from MacEwan University in Canada.
19:30:50 <heidie> We can put you in touch with him.
19:30:58 <ktstolee> heidie: that’s excellent to hear. I’m concerned about the quick turn-around from the workshop to the Spring semester.
19:31:22 <heidie> Darci and I are exploring Mozilla Accessibility in their Dev Tools, along with at least one and possibly two other POSSE alums.
19:31:56 <heidie> One of the things we're hoping to do is to build faculty communities around HFOSS projects so that there is support for instructors.
19:32:02 <lorip> heidie: didn't Josh use Ushahidi in Wavyleaf? he may be able to help ktstolee in Raleigh
19:32:18 <darci> It's really nice to have faculty working together to help each other solve problems.
19:32:20 <heidie> lorip, Hmmm, I don't remember for sure, but I think so.
19:32:55 <hislopg> lorip: yes, wavy leaf is an implementation of Ushahidi
19:33:09 <heidie> We'll be talking more about projects as we go forward.
19:33:23 <hislopg> kstolee: Josh will be in Raleigh and used Ushahidi with students
19:33:27 <heidie> Are there any other questions about projects?
19:33:55 <mhills> Not sure, I need to read more info on them, I have some initial interests but need to think about it more.
19:34:01 <mhills> I have seen some links are broken, though, like:
19:34:03 <mhills> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Category:Ushahidi
19:34:36 <darci> mhills: This works for me?
19:34:51 <mhills> That’s a MediaWiki category link, so I’m assuming that just means nobody has added anything into the category
19:35:17 <mhills> darci That’s odd. Actually, I’m getting a “can’t find the server” message, which is odder, it isn’t a 404.
19:35:23 <hislopg> mhills: works for me too
19:35:32 <darci> There are a number of pages in the "Category"
19:35:52 <heidie> Very weird.
19:36:04 <mhills> Now it’s fine, must have just been down for a moment.
19:36:29 <heidie> Ah, OK.
19:36:40 <heidie> Are there any questions at all?
19:36:54 <mhills> Bad timing on my part :O
19:37:32 <mhills> Maybe this is answered somewhere, but is there some specific progress metric for the next month and a half?
19:38:01 <hislopg> mhills: just that you be involved and progressing on the stage 1 activities
19:38:03 <heidie> We'd like folks to log their progress on the spreadsheet.
19:38:05 <heidie> #link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1igSyZ7wWXmlmqqgvtWTJqvsFj2wsQHVJW2qAGjnmFpA/edit?usp=sharing
19:38:12 <mhills> heidie: okay, thanks
19:38:18 <heidie> And there are rough milestones every two weeks.
19:38:46 <darci> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_1_Activities
19:38:50 <darci> Dates are listed here
19:38:56 <heidie> Thanks darci
19:39:02 <darci> :)
19:39:28 <heidie> Any other questions?
19:40:06 <mhills> Not at this time. Is this the best place to ask them going forward?
19:40:39 <heidie> mhills, you can ping one of us using this IRC channel or send one of us email. Either is fine.
19:40:48 <mhills> heidie, okay, thanks
19:41:41 <heidie> OK, I'm going to end the meeting. Feel free to hang out if you'd like.
