17:02:32 <zodbot> striker: strikerttd '' <strikerttd@gmail.com>
17:04:46 <nirik> alright, lets go ahead and get started. There's no tickets, so this is mostly just a meeting for any feedback, etc.
17:04:53 <nirik> #topic weeks in review
17:05:05 <nirik> anyone have any items they have noticed of late? common bugs or issues?
17:05:48 <nirik> it's been pretty normal/quiet from what I have seen... nothing particularly new cropping up
17:06:05 <striker> same
17:07:17 <lsr> nirik: Nothing comes to mind as far as end user issues but I have a general issue with the url shortner usage.
17:07:20 <linuxmodder> .hello corey84
17:07:22 <zodbot> linuxmodder: corey84 'Corey Sheldon' <sheldon.corey@gmail.com>
17:07:27 <nirik> I have thought again about making a page/blog about the catalyst driver and why it doesn't work and you shouldn't want to use it... but I haven't gotten to it.
17:07:45 <striker> doesn't work because of Kernel version
17:07:48 <nirik> lsr: url shortener usage?
17:08:05 <nirik> striker: and until recently X version, etc
17:08:05 <lsr> nirik: I don't think we should be engouraging the use of url shortners. I realize that fpaste gives a ur1 link but I think it would be best if we all made an effort to require users to only give us the paste.fedoraproject.org link or an fpaste.org link. Imgur would of course be fine for images.
17:08:31 <striker> nirik: can you make a blod post about amdgpu ?
17:08:37 <nirik> well, several things here...
17:09:15 <nirik> 1) ur1 is actually too slow a lot of the time and doesn't work, 2) that was added for people who had to retype links from one system to another not wanting to type the full paste url.
17:09:57 <nirik> whats wrong with a shortener for those folks? not sure I understand the concern?
17:10:53 <lsr> nirik: The issue is that we're clicking a random link that could lead to anywhere.
17:10:55 <linuxmodder> had a d/c sorry folks
17:11:05 <Khaytsus> I've seen it timeout/fail for me too.. we're talking about fpaste slow/failing?
17:11:11 <nirik> lsr: ... like any other random link in irc or the internet?
17:11:35 <linuxmodder> the url shortener can make redirects more an issue
17:11:36 <striker> lsr: which shortner are you talking about?
17:11:41 <striker> the one that fpaste gives is specific
17:12:07 <lsr> nirik: If someone choses to click random links on Irc that's of course their choice, but it shouldn't be something that we should be encouraging anyone to do when they want to help other users
17:12:21 <lsr> striker: Any shortner
17:12:46 <nirik> well, you are free to tell anyone you are helping to please use a known link... but I think enforcing that on everyone is... overboard.
17:13:11 <lsr> nirik: I disagree.
17:13:49 <Khaytsus> I'll curl a ranndom URL sometimes
17:14:02 <Khaytsus> Just to make sure it isn't going somewhere I recognize as bad
17:14:10 <Khaytsus> But.. stuff happens like that
17:14:16 <striker> -1 to enforcing the non-use of url shortners on everyone
17:14:32 <striker> if we find someone posting a malicious short url, we can deal with it then
17:14:44 <lsr> striker: The damage is already done at that point
17:15:02 <striker> lsr: we can't really stop people from posting links
17:15:07 <Khaytsus> IMO there's nothing we can do here. As striker said, if someone does something dumb, deal with it
17:15:49 <striker> damage can be done whether there is a rule against it or not, just like cursing
17:15:50 <nirik> folks post tons of links that aren't to ua1 or fpaste.
17:16:13 <Khaytsus> And people can happily post all kinds of insanity to fpaste itself
17:16:37 <lsr> striker: If you make it clear that no one should be clicking on or giving a url shortner link, then everyone is less likely to click on them. If we encourage the usage of url shortners, then most users, perhaps less knowledgable about the risks will click them thinking that if it's something that #fedora encourages then it should be fine.
17:17:01 <linuxmodder> +1 a disclaimer let them do as they wish after
17:17:36 <Khaytsus> lsr: Why, specifically, are you wanting people to police URLs?
17:17:44 <Khaytsus> Someone g**tse you?
17:17:53 <lsr> I'm not suggested that we stop users from posting any urls other than fpaste or paste.fedora....
17:18:26 <Khaytsus> I can happily ignore pastebin.com URLs, myself ;)
17:18:27 <striker> we can't stop people from doing anything, really
17:18:33 <striker> we can stop repeat offenders
17:18:35 <linuxmodder> nor am I but maybe a mention of the risks on topic or on a cron from fedbot would be good i think
17:18:45 <lsr> If someoen is pasting information, we should require specific pastebins
17:19:06 <lsr> *suggesting
17:19:18 <linuxmodder> lsr, established ones is as far as I go there not a 'whitelist' persay
17:19:22 <striker> lsr: the bottom line is we can't stop people from using what they use, and we already have a suggesting in the FAQ to use fpaste
17:19:31 <Khaytsus> I personally always say "do XYZ to fpaste" but what else can you do.
17:19:36 <striker> s/suggesting/suggestion
17:19:49 <nirik> people do use other pastebins... and sometimes folks wanting to help them ask them to use fpaste...
17:20:06 <nirik> which is perfectly fine, but should be up to whoever is helping them...
17:20:32 <lsr> striker: The fact that fpaste gives a url shortned link is perhaps part of the problem, since we ask for fpaste --sysinfo frequently.
17:20:50 <striker> lsr: fpaste's short url service is dedicated
17:21:02 <linuxmodder> I still wouldn't be opposed to a fedy style warning in topic or on a cron tho
17:21:02 * nirik really doesn't get the problem here. If you are paranoid about shorteners, perhaps run a browser in a sandbox for them?
17:21:04 <lsr> striker: Dedicated?
17:21:34 <linuxmodder> its slaved to fedora I think is his point
17:21:34 <Khaytsus> Topic is way too long as it is
17:21:56 <nirik> it's not really tho. it's a seperate service... we just add a call to make one on each fpaste.
17:22:13 <linuxmodder> true
17:22:17 <striker> oh, well - I was mistaken about that
17:22:37 <lsr> nirik: I know how to deal with the links if I need to. I'm concerned that it's something that we seem to encourage or at least make no effort to warn users away from.
17:22:38 <Khaytsus> Nothing we can do here except make the suggestiont o use fpaste when asking for info. IMO.
17:23:41 <nirik> has anyone seen a massive bunch of ur1.ca links that lead to bad content recently?
17:24:03 <linuxmodder> debian has a mention (or did) in topic for official pastebin is dpaste
17:25:03 <linuxmodder> sure but not on our channel (mostly other nets)(
17:25:32 <nirik> anyhow, unless there's further data sounds like we don't want to do anything here.
17:26:12 <nirik> #topic Open Floor
17:26:19 <nirik> anyone have any additional items for open floor?
17:27:44 <linuxmodder> not me
17:28:23 <Khaytsus> Everyone happy with the "fedy" reference now? :)
17:29:37 <nirik> well, it doesn't mention it at all now, so thats fine
17:29:44 <linuxmodder> the don't use anything other than fedora, copr.rpmfusion ? that sure
17:31:09 <nirik> there's likely some pretty dangerous copr repos out there, but hopefully people will ask if they have questions on that...
17:31:21 <linuxmodder> hopefully
17:32:08 * nirik will close out the meeting in a few if nothing else.
17:33:49 <nirik> thanks for coming everyone!
