15:05:28 <stoney> I that's probably all for today
15:05:35 <stoney> Welcome
15:05:43 <steve_> Okay
15:05:47 <stoney> I hope everyone has been enjoying the holidays! :)
15:06:03 <stoney> #topic Discuss progress
15:06:16 <stoney> First up, how are things going on stage 1 activities?
15:06:27 <stoney> where are you? and do you have questions?
15:07:28 <SharonP> I'm way behind, and finding they take much more time than estimated.
15:07:33 <stoney> oh and the agenda for this meeting is here: http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_3
15:08:00 <hunter_> I'm behind as well. But today I have some time to work on these.
15:08:14 <Rob_Domanski> I'm cruising along, about to finish Stage 1B, which I believe is all that's necessary to complete before the in-person workshop next week, right?
15:08:30 <stoney> SharonP they certainly can... set a time limit and stick to it. If you can't get any more done within the allotted time, move on.
15:09:05 <lorip> Rob_Domanski - there is 1C as well
15:09:13 <lorip> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_1_Activities#Part_C
15:10:11 <Rob_Domanski> Ah, glad I asked. I was under the impression we would be doing 1C in-person.
15:10:22 <stoney> thanks lorip !
15:10:27 <stoney> forgot the link :)
15:10:40 <lorip> me too! sorry for the confusion - C.3 will be important for next week
15:11:03 <lorip> and C.2 is a github activity which will also help with our face-to-face meeting
15:11:16 <stoney> be sure to complete the git activity... you'll want git installed before you arrive at the workshop... there will be some hands-on activities during the workshop that use git
15:11:23 <stoney> and github :)
15:11:35 <stoney> what lorip said :)
15:11:37 <steve_> I am behind too but I have been catching up this week. I am in Stage 1B
15:12:38 <stoney> awesome, there is still time to catch up :)
15:12:45 <lorip> we know that the end of the semester/term is hectic, glad you are finding time to catch up!
15:13:00 <lorip> ajan - can you do a quick intro?
15:14:34 <stoney> shall we move to the next topic?
15:15:03 <stoney> #topic Discuss the results of B.4 and C.3 (FOSS in Courses Planning I and II)
15:15:41 <stoney> what are you'all thinking about regarding your classes and hfoss? any ideas, thoughts?
15:16:26 <lorip> these will be used during our face to face meeting
15:16:40 <lorip> the agenda for it is at #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities
15:16:41 <SharonP> Im still in the "looking for ideas" stage.
15:17:03 <lorip> SharonP - what course do you hope to target?
15:17:22 <SharonP> CS 2 OOP in Python
15:17:44 <hunter_> Do you tie HFOSS projects into standard CS courses (eg Algorithms, etc) or cover them in capstone courses? I can see doing it either way, I just wonder if you've found a particular venue that works well.
15:18:34 <lorip> SharonP one option is to use an HFOSS project as a case study - to look at example code, use for tracing, etc.
15:19:03 <stoney> hunter_ capstone and software engineering courses are the easiest to incorporate
15:19:17 <Rob_Domanski> I find it very easy to get lost in the big existing projects like Ushahidi, and I feel like it would especially be so for intro students. Instead I was thinking of creating my own simpler HFOSS project and design a few activities - some coding, some data collection - and build it out from there.
15:19:25 <lorip> hunter_ I believe people who have tied it into a software engineering or capstone have been most successful, but I teach at a 2 year school that doesn't have either of those courses
15:19:32 <SharonP> That's a good suggestion. I'll spend time looking at code.
15:19:51 <lorip> we've tied it into our mobile app class as well as given homework assignments in our CS1 & CS2
15:19:54 <stoney> in earlier courses one can look for code artifacts that implement or use data structures or algorithms, or that demonstrate good or bad coding styples
15:20:00 <stoney> *styles*
15:20:18 <hunter_> yes, we don't have SE as a course designation and because of our emphasis on cybersecurity our capstone is usually intensively devoted to that. But perhaps there's some project that gives some synergy there.
15:20:49 <lorip> SharonP - I believe Ushahidi is in Python and someone mentioned civiccrm on our last IRC which I believe is Python as well
15:21:33 <stoney> hunter_ I think I remember someone performing a security analysis of a project and giving the results back to the project's community
15:21:39 <lorip> stoney - didn't steven crain do a bunch of activities around cybersecurity?
15:21:49 <hunter_> that's a great suggestion!
15:21:53 <stoney> lorip maybe that's who I was thinking of
15:22:06 * stoney is very bad at recalling names
15:22:13 <lorip> Rob_Domanski - yes, big projects can be daunting
15:22:40 <lorip> one of the things we are looking into is faculty-led projects as well as project playground/sandboxes
15:22:49 <lorip> did you have a project idea in mind?
15:23:01 <lorip> and what course did you hope to incorporate it into?
15:24:27 <stoney> lorip's question is a good transition to the next topic...
15:24:29 <stoney> #topic Sign up for Stage 2 groups
15:24:55 <lorip> hunter - take a look at #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Category:Privacy_and_Security
15:25:06 <lorip> I believe those are the security activities I was thinking of...
15:25:08 <stoney> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups signups for stage 2 groups
15:25:16 <hunter_> cool, thank you
15:25:54 <Rob_Domanski> In many intro CS0) courses there is a module on basic HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I was thinking of creating a project centered on a website that would display information for local homeless shelters in the area. Then incentivize students to contribute both by writing some simple code (Javascript, probably) and colelcting information on the shelters that could be included on the page with the Google Maps API, and things like
15:25:57 <stoney> If you haven't done so, please sign up for stage 2 groups
15:25:59 <Rob_Domanski> Need to flesh the idea out more.
15:26:08 <stoney> these will be used to organize some sessions during stage
15:26:10 <stoney> 2
15:26:11 <stoney> :)
15:26:40 <stoney> Rob_Domanski cool idea!
15:27:20 <Rob_Domanski> Thanks!
15:27:21 <lorip> Rob_Domanski - very cool idea! I'm wondering if this could be a Ushahidi deployment...
15:28:29 <lorip> but that probably wouldn't work with the course objectives :)
15:29:17 <stoney> ok... next topic :)
15:29:21 <stoney> #topic Enter your arrival and departure times
15:29:31 <stoney> you don't need to do this :)
15:29:40 <lorip> just a quick reminder, please sign up for one of those stage 2 groups
15:29:41 <stoney> I just thought I'd make a point of saying that here :)
15:29:56 <stoney> right... do sign up for stage 2 groups
15:30:13 <stoney> you don't need to tell us about your arrival times :)
15:30:28 <stoney> last topic :)
15:30:30 <stoney> #topic Please make sure to arrive at Stage 2
15:30:43 <stoney> ... with git installed :)
15:30:44 <lorip> oops, and we forgot to remind people to log your stage 1 activity in the google sheet #link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HvgclSLZE4f1fDrw9S7ywP6MrMsAaWjWXATQ3W7H3Wg/edit#gid=0
15:30:45 <stoney> lol
15:31:19 <lorip> and you will need your github login info too!
15:31:59 <stoney> Right... I think completing C2 will make sure you are ready with respects to git and GitHub
15:32:16 <lorip> and questions about local arrangements for next week?
15:32:31 <stoney> #topic Q&A
15:32:36 * lorip thinking I hope hunter will be able to answer those!
15:32:50 <Rob_Domanski> Do we know the room number at John Jay where to go?
15:32:51 <stoney> What other questions do you all have?
15:33:00 <stoney> that's a good one :)
15:33:04 <stoney> lorip?
15:33:13 * lorip looking...
15:33:25 <SharonP> just basics - location at JJ?
15:33:26 <hunter_> Oh yes
15:33:42 <hunter_> We'll be on the 6th floor of what we call the New Building (inspired name)
15:33:56 <hunter_> It's at the corner of 11th ave and 59th st
15:33:57 <lorip> Room 6.67
15:34:07 <SharonP> got it
15:34:09 <hunter_> That's right we'll start in 6.67
15:34:18 <hunter_> I think we also have some activities planned in 6.61
15:34:27 <hunter_> Both of those are labs on the east side of the floor
15:34:31 <lorip> hunter_ is there any particular place we need to enter in terms of security?
15:35:04 <hunter_> Yes, you'll have to go through a security checkpoint. This involves showing your ID and saying where you're going. If you have any trouble with that please text me
15:35:09 <hunter_> 301.706.5654
15:35:20 <lorip> we will have a light breakfast starting at 8:30am
15:35:41 <hunter_> It's important to have the room 6.67 on hand for security because they will ask the name of the room you're visiting.
15:35:57 <lorip> lunch will be at JJ and dinner will be out at Greek Kitchen - you should have already let Heidi know if you can attend dinner or not
15:36:09 <lorip> thanks hunter_!
15:37:06 <lorip> hunter_ random question - are your rooms typically cold or hot?
15:37:30 <hunter_> they are always uncomfortable, but never in the same way twice. Just kidding. They are usually hot
15:37:38 <stoney> lol
15:37:48 <lorip> lol
15:37:59 <stoney> awesome... anything else?
15:38:06 <lorip> we will post additional information on the agenda page #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities
15:38:19 <lorip> and will probably send out an email with last minute details
15:38:42 <lorip> but please feel free to email any of us as you work on stage 1 activities or if you have any questions
15:39:18 <stoney> with that... I think we have reached the end of our agenda
15:39:22 <stoney> thanks all!
15:39:25 <hunter_> thank you
15:39:27 <stoney> we'll see you soon!
