Anything else I'm supposed to say? 15:04:02 nope - that's perfect 15:04:14 And I think djskrien still needs to go. 15:04:26 Hi, Dale Skrien — Colby College — I was also in yesterday’s IRC 15:04:34 thanks! 15:04:38 did we miss anyone? 15:05:15 hi Ying_Lui we are just finishing up intros - can you provide your name and institution? 15:05:29 Ying Liu, St. John's University 15:05:33 here's our agenda for the meeting 15:05:41 #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_3 15:05:44 I have the agenda. Thanks. 15:06:05 so next up is progress on the Stage 1 activities 15:06:10 #topic progress 15:06:21 how is everything going? any questions? 15:06:55 I am doing OK, despite I am still teaching 5 courses. I am planning to finish part C this weekend 15:07:14 Going well, down to just C.4, plan to work pretty hard on that this week and early next. 15:07:32 Finally, finished part B, need to do part C 15:07:45 I will also need to finish part C. 15:07:53 Working on Part C 15:08:02 everything pretty clear; playing catch-up (life happens) ... will be on target soon, I think 15:08:12 as a heads up, we will be using activities B4, C4 & C3 next week in Philadelphia 15:08:57 C3 is the GIT activity and we have additional parts of the workshop based upon this 15:09:19 please make sure you have git installed on the computer you bring with you and your github account info 15:09:26 minor question on the bugzilla stuff -- I couldn't figure out the meaning of the shading or the colors. Otherwise, I am up to date and working on C4. 15:09:27 darci - did I miss anything on that? 15:09:27 Not bad; finishing up part C 15:10:01 Shading seems to indicate comments present. 15:10:06 I had the same issue with jmac on the shading in bugzilla. Any thoughts? 15:10:18 I could not find out about the colors, though. 15:10:24 No, I would just add that completing B.4 and C.4 and thinking about what you want to do in your classes is really helpful as we head into the face-to-face workshop. 15:11:17 Question re: stage II groups. Will it cause problems if I sign up for two courses? I have a whole curriculum to design and I'm not sure yet if I'm teaching more of a software engineering course or more of an OO design course or more of a hybrid... 15:12:15 Also, I see Dale is alone under OO Design :-) 15:12:25 Bugzilla colors seemed to correspond to the second bit of the importance field (e.g. Red -> critical or blocker), just from observation, never did find any documentation. 15:13:39 janet_ it is fine to sign up for two now, but you may have to choose one to start when we break into groups 15:13:40 Yes, I was just looking again. Other examples, normal and high normal. 15:14:05 red, is normal critical, etc. 15:14:05 Thanks, lorip, that makes sense 15:14:38 speaking of B.4 and C.4 what are people thinking they would like to do in their courses next year? 15:14:48 Regarding groups, it may also make sense to combine groups. 15:14:56 About the projects , I also wanted to sign for two, but I thought that we must pick one 15:15:16 For now, it may be best to pick one, if you can. 15:15:22 and if you haven't signed up for groups - please do so at #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups 15:15:38 At Dickinson we are planning a revision to our year-long senior capstone. 15:16:06 I'm working with Tom Naps who has chosen OpenMRS. We teach a two course SE sequence and I'm thinking of doing some smaller activities in the first course 15:16:08 braught - can you provide a little more info about your thoughts? 15:16:19 I'm hoping to spend a good bit of time in the next week thinking about activities for early in the course. 15:16:45 braught: Great! And please post those ideas! 15:16:51 Things to help them pick a project and keep working as they get up to speed. 15:16:54 georgethomas is your SE course a senior level? 15:17:26 braught - so your idea is students will work on different projects that they choose? 15:18:05 Current thinking is that students will form groups around projects that they choose. 15:18:34 Then there will be series of activities that they complete using their projects, before laying out a plan for the rest of the year. 15:18:39 It is more a Junior level course with the second one being the senior level course 15:19:44 janet_ you said you are designing a whole curriculum? any thoughts on where you might try to fit this in? 15:20:31 Yes, whole curriculum from the ground up. I have the equivalent of two courses to play with. 15:20:51 This is the last piece of the major to figure out. 15:21:14 wow - that is both cool and scary to design a whole curriculum 15:21:36 I was thinking for Cybersecurity course but with Professor Sena at MassBay we decided to include this foe an Independent Studies course and the CSCE club. 15:21:42 :-) Whitman has a strong "senior experience" culture, so a senior capstone course is likely. But I wouldn't teach that until 2017-18, and then with only 3-4 students or so 15:22:23 What I should be focusing on is a junior-level software design/engineering course. 15:22:33 germinalisern - what semester can students enroll in an Independent Study? 15:24:07 It depends of the background, we have a lot of different type of students, but usually last semester 15:24:12 A few more details on the Dickinson course. At this stage, we are open to the possibility of many different models. The model that Grant ("braught") describes is the most likely one as we go into the workshop. But we would like to think about how to structure this course and get feedback from other workshop attendees. It is a year-long capstone course and it needs to scale to up to, say, 25 student 15:24:12 s. Although typically the numbers would be more like 10-20. 15:24:38 poritzj or Ying_Liu - thoughts on how you will incorporate HFOSS into your curriculum? 15:24:55 jmac - agreed1 15:25:14 darci - can you think of who has used HFOSS in a capstone? Karl? Ben? 15:25:19 jmac, I'm going to have that problem too 15:25:30 just not yet next year :-) 15:25:38 I have been teaching software engineering/capstone course, which is a senior course. I think I will use HFOSS projects for my students to work on as teams. 15:25:43 What about Becka? 15:25:58 I thought she taught software engineering 15:26:19 * lorip thinking to come up with POSSE alum who might be good resources 15:26:32 Good idea, lorip. 15:27:41 other people's thoughts? or questions? 15:27:45 I voiced a concern in yesterday’s IRC that I would like to voice again at this meeting. I’m a little worried about the amount of time and trouble git and GitHub will cause in my class. I’m new to git and so I won’t be a lot of help to students with subtle questions. At yesterday’s meeting, everyone seemed to indicate git wasn’t a problem for their students. However, I read the SIGCSE list message from Bonnie MacKel 15:27:46 back in December #link https://listserv.acm.org/SCRIPTS/WA-ACMLPX.CGI?A2=ind1512E&L=SIGCSE-members&F=&S=&P=82 and so I’m wondering if anyone else has had the problems Bonnie had. I hope we have time to discuss this during Stage 2 and I can get all my concerns cleared up. 15:28:30 djskrien: We will be doing two git tutorials during the workshop. 15:28:43 These are tutorials that you can use with your classes. 15:29:15 I'm certainly not saying that you will be an expert after doing these, but I do think that you will feel more at ease. 15:29:44 djskrien and that is a concern, but it is really important for students to become comfortable with git and github as potential employers will ask to see their github accounts 15:30:06 You will also have members of this team and participants who you can use as resources! This is a huge help! :) 15:30:42 djskrien - what level students are you looking to do this with? 15:30:58 Actually I used in a Programming class for non CS students (Python) and the students had a lot of issues with GIT 15:31:05 Juniors and seniors in an upper-level OOD course. Class size is 27. 15:32:14 darci used it with 2nd year students last semester and was successful with having them be able to navigate 15:32:29 djskrien: will your students be working in an existing open source project? 15:33:16 That’s my hope. In the past I’ve had them develop a Swing app from scratch in a sequencce of projects, but I thought a HFOSS project would be more interesting and useful to them. 15:34:44 Depending on the level of their contributions, they may only need minimal interactions with git/github. 15:35:34 djskrien, I'm also interested in an upper-level OOD course. I'm intrigued by the opportunities for code reading. 15:36:24 I never used git/github before. I am very interested in trying to use git/github in my senior software engineering class. 15:37:35 poritzj - what class are you planning to incorporate HFOSS into? 15:38:01 well, I'm allowed to design something completely new, I'm thinking of using an existing HFOSS project in a course with writing, coding, and sociology students 15:38:20 sociology students? 15:38:59 Regarding Git, I've used it the last time in our SE 1 course, and while students were not experts by the end of it, they could all use it reasonably well 15:39:09 poritzj, that's cool! 15:39:27 well, the small city we live in has a huge gang problem (we were in the NYT for it!), I was thinking of mapping incidents and responses, getting sociology (criminology) students interested somehow 15:39:39 cool! 15:39:50 very interesting! 15:40:02 poritzj, are you planning to join the Ushahidi group then? 15:40:13 yup! 15:40:13 a ushahidi deployment would be perfect 15:40:41 * lorip thinking - anything else on FOSS in Courses? 15:41:00 I'm interested in Ushahidi because it uses PHP...the local web development firm is a PHP shop and there is a lot of interesting code. It looks like Ushahidi is going through a lot of changes though? 15:41:49 Relaunched last October https://www.ushahidi.com/blog 15:42:00 janet_: Why is that a concern? 15:42:09 janet_ right Ushahidi 3 came out last fall 15:42:47 It seems like there is a lot of momentum in this group around OpenMRS, not as much around Ushahidi. http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Ushahidi 15:44:04 janet_ we have a pretty active group of people from previous POSSEs who are using Ushahidi 15:44:33 There's always a group interested in Ushahidi, you can also rely on former participants! 15:44:47 Is there somehwere else I should be looking for their activity? 15:45:39 Not sure, we can do some looking around. This is one of the organizational issues we are concerned about. 15:46:04 janet_ good question - I think we logged our meetings this year, I'll have to see if I can find the logs 15:46:08 Thanks! 15:46:18 This was harder to find than it should have been: https://www.ushahidi.com/support/get-involved 15:47:10 * lorip looking at the time - we should probably move on 15:47:34 a couple of things regarding next week 15:47:46 as I mentioned, please have git installed 15:48:03 we would also like people to put their travel info into the following titan pad 15:48:07 janet_: you can go to http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Special:AllPages and search ushahidi to see what others have worked on 15:48:21 #link https://titanpad.com/POSSETravel 15:48:43 so that people might be able to coordinate transportation from the airport 15:49:00 Thanks, darci, I think all those activities are also listed on http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Learning_Activities 15:49:19 (install git -- is that anything more than the main git package on a Debian-based system?) 15:49:36 Some of these pages may not be activities. 15:50:05 we plan to meet at the hotel at 1:30 to go to drexel as a group - if you plan to go directly to drexel please note that as well 15:50:27 questions about next week? 15:51:42 will there be some additional info. on the hotel, transportation, etc.? Tom Naps and I arrive only at 2 so we will meet you at Drexel 15:52:31 greg will be sending out a final email with information 15:53:02 i am also arriving at 1:45 pm..... 15:53:24 Did everyone book the hotel? I checked the hotel. There is no room left. Any other recommended hotels? 15:53:37 we have a hotel block already set up 15:53:58 the reservations are already make in each of your names and will be paid for directly 15:54:04 Do I need to book by myself? 15:54:10 Thank you. 15:55:09 anything else? 15:55:29 Look forward to meeting with you all next wednesday. 15:55:52 Ok see you all next week 15:56:05 Nothing more from me, see you all in a week. 15:56:05 we are looking forward to meeting you face to face 15:56:15 see y'all then! 15:56:16 if you have any questions please let any of us know 15:56:16 See you next week 15:56:17 Bye all! 15:56:21 safe travels! 15:56:23 Thank you. 15:56:33 #endmeeting
