14:08:35 * lorip thinking should we move on to george-thomas?
14:08:39 <george-thomas> Hi everyone, George Thomas from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh; attending POSSE for first time.
14:08:46 <ithabarr> John Barr, Ithaca College. I’m new to FOSS and am interested in finding projects to use in a mobile dev course (Android or iOS) and a GIS course.

14:11:53 <lorip> welcome everyone!
14:12:07 <lorip> here's our agenda for today
14:12:10 <lorip> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_2
14:12:50 <lorip> our first item is an quick update on stage 1 activities
14:12:58 <lorip> #topic Stage 1 activities
14:13:10 <lorip> questions? problems? how is it going?
14:13:31 <ithabarr> Hi Lori, I have a question about the project evaluation and the blog
14:13:43 <ithabarr> I’m a little confused about exactly what we’re supposed to do.
14:14:01 <ithabarr> I’ve done the openMRS eval and the field trip and posted these to my blog
14:14:02 <lorip> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Project_Evaluation_Activity
14:14:15 * lorip looking
14:14:33 <ithabarr> but I’m not sure whether we’re supposed to also do another eval and post that to…the wiki? blog?
14:14:36 <docrea> Here's one I did the last round if you want an example: https://foss.docrea.org/2015/08/15/foss-field-trip/
14:15:25 <lorip> ithabarr: can you provide a link to your blog?
14:16:13 <ithabarr> There’s a link in the participants list, but I’ll find the link and send it here…
14:16:30 <ithabarr> https://ithacathoughts.wordpress.com
14:17:29 <darci> ithabarr: I think that you only need to do one project eval
14:17:29 <lorip> darci - please chime in here, but I you were posting the evaluation to the wiki
14:18:08 <darci> This is, I believe, an evaluation of the OpenMRS project only.
14:18:26 <darci> Is there something in the instructions that makes you think that you need to do another eval?
14:18:26 <wahlst> That seemed a little unclear in the instructions to me - I think I ended up posting my eval in both places.
14:19:10 <wahlst> But I didn't get the impression that I was meant to do more than one eval.
14:19:32 <darci> Oh, maybe I misunderstood...were you asking about where to post the eval?
14:19:38 <ithabarr> yes, in the project evaluation activity, under “Deliverables” is this: Wiki posting of evaluation of a project from the list of HFOSS projects
14:19:40 <lorip> correct - only 1 evaluation
14:20:31 <darci> According to this you should have a link to your eval from your blog: The evaluation template should be uploaded to your blog -- while working on your blog post position the cursor on the page where you would like the link to appear and click 'Add Media'.
14:21:29 <ithabarr> Yes, I did that, but it seems that this is the OpenMRS eval, but the “Deliverables” section makes it seem like there should also be an eval of another project.
14:21:37 <lorip> I see what you are referring to
14:21:45 <darci> Oh, now I see the confusion. Yes, why don't you include a link in both places.
14:22:01 <ithabarr> ok
14:22:31 <lorip> OpenMRS is one of the projects - my recollection is that we gave people a choice in previous POSSEs and updated the activity but missed the deliverables - thanks for catching that!
14:22:53 <ithabarr> Should I do another eval of another HFOSS project and post that also?
14:23:21 <lorip> if you like, but we are not expecting you to
14:23:35 <ithabarr> ok, thanks.
14:23:53 <lorip> other questions?
14:24:47 <wahlst> How strongly to you recommend trying to install our chosen project? Its shown up twice now, but optional both times.
14:25:32 <darci> I don't think it would hurt to put a bit of time into this task.
14:25:51 <darci> We've made it optional because we don't want participants spending too much time on it.
14:25:52 <wahlst> OK.
14:25:53 <lorip> I think giving the install a try is really helpful before coming to POSSE because it gives you a sense if there are stumbling blocks
14:26:17 <darci> Our experience in the past is that it can be a really time consuming task!
14:26:19 <lorip> but as darci said, we don't want people spending huge amounts of time on it
14:26:33 <wahlst> OK, that makes sense.
14:26:45 <darci> If you've tried, be sure to keep good notes.
14:27:04 <lorip> but that does bring up choosing a project (which is one of the topics for this meeting)
14:27:10 <darci> That can be a great source of information for those who have not tried it and a great stating point from face to face discussion.
14:27:12 <wahlst> Haven't yet, but I will if/when I get a chance.
14:27:48 <lorip> before I move on - other questions about the activities?
14:27:53 <docrea> It helps a great deal to try an install of at least your chosen project.
14:28:46 <george-thomas> I don't really have any questions on the activities right now. I'm in the middle of working with Stage 1 - Part B activities
14:29:02 <lorip> #topic stage 2 groups
14:29:47 <lorip> to help us prepare for stage 2 (our face-to-face meeting in Philadelphia), we'd like you to sign up for groups
14:29:51 <lorip> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups
14:30:09 <lorip> please sign up for 1 project and 1 course that you are interested in working on
14:31:20 <Aria> Would you like us to indicate here/now our choices?
14:31:45 <Leo_> So we just need our names under project/course?
14:32:10 <lorip> Aria, you don't have to do it now, but we'd like to you to be thinking about it and sign up in the next week or so
14:32:25 <Aria> Oh ok, thanks
14:32:32 <lorip> Leo_ yes, add your name under 1 project and under 1 course
14:32:55 <lorip> questions about projects? or courses?
14:33:16 <wahlst> I've been looking at OpenMRS, but the scale and complexity of the project is quite daunting! Any words of wisdom on how much of an issue this is?
14:33:50 <Leo_> I am thinking of OpenMRS as well.
14:34:05 <lorip> wahlst: we've had a number of faculty successfully use OpenMRS in various courses
14:34:15 <Aria> Can you say a bit about the “Stand-alone HFOSS/Openness” course?
14:34:23 <lorip> darci has gotten around some of that by using the mobile version
14:34:33 <darci> Yes, it is a large project, but there's lots of opportunity for contributions.
14:34:56 <lorip> others have really gotten into the code base and have found they like it as a project
14:35:09 <darci> Some have also chosen to work on/develop a module, rather than work on the core.
14:35:26 <lorip> Aria: the thought here is to have a course that is not code based but rather about the concept of openness
14:35:42 <wahlst> That's helpful - thanks!
14:35:44 <ithabarr> In the FOSS2Serve page about Ushahidi it says that the project is undergoing a major rewrite. Is this still in process? And could you have any more info about the Android project besides what is on the “Android App” page?
14:35:50 <Aria> Wonderful . . . perfect for this humanist :-)
14:35:53 <lorip> some people have done it as a freshman seminar type class or special topics
14:36:43 <docrea> There are some "gotchas" in Ushahidi version 3 in terms of Android, but there are workarounds and the group is aware of them.
14:36:53 <Leo_> Lorip, can you say more on "A course about the concept of openness"? Or will we discuss it on site?
14:37:40 <docrea> Just finished a senior mobile development course in which the student team wrote an Android app, installed an Ushahidi server, etc. all using Version 3.
14:38:18 <lorip> yes.... the idea is to teach about why people choose to make things open - for example, why would a school make their courses available online for free?
14:38:51 <darci> There could also be some discussion about open data, open government, etc.
14:38:54 <lorip> why do people choose to have open software? I believe people have talked about open government as well
14:39:11 * lorip wondering where is the link I want to post?
14:39:21 <darci> to?
14:39:32 <Leo_> Thanks.
14:39:54 <lorip> darci - what is the website that Ruth runs for Red Hat?
14:40:19 <darci> opensource.com?
14:40:20 <lorip> #link https://opensource.com/
14:40:59 <ithabarr> docrea: could you describe your Android app a bit?
14:41:13 * lorip what did I miss while I was trying to answer the openness course question?
14:42:57 <docrea> Sure. The team created a lost pet finder app that interfaced with an Ushahidi server to track lost pet's movements via user reporting.
14:43:10 <darci> :)
14:43:13 <darci> Love it!
14:43:41 <ithabarr> docrea: did the app include mapping? Just trying to figure out where this might fit in my course.
14:43:43 <Aria> Awesome idea!
14:43:52 <docrea> It's rough (pun intended), but functional. And I'll be happy to talk about it more in Philly
14:44:04 <docrea> Yes, pet locations are plotted on OpenStreetMaps
14:44:14 <ithabarr> Very cool!
14:44:19 <docrea> Pins are dropped from user reports
14:44:34 <docrea> And descriptions can be assigned on each pin.
14:44:38 <docrea> Users can search for pets, etc.
14:44:49 <docrea> And we added an API to pet finder as well.
14:44:58 <docrea> To pull date from there.
14:45:15 <ithabarr> I assume that you’re just access an API so I could use other mobile clients as well (i.e. iOS).
14:45:17 <docrea> *data
14:45:34 <docrea> For petfinder, yes.
14:45:54 <docrea> For Ushahidi there are a multitude of functions to use.
14:46:24 <docrea> And figuring them out tends to be half the battle for students.
14:46:42 <docrea> But the Ushahidi team was great working with them.
14:47:00 <ithabarr> How difficullt is it to install the Ushahidi server?
14:48:04 <docrea> We ran it off of Heroku, but you can install it in a VM.
14:48:18 <docrea> Students created install guides I'm working on putting together and can share.
14:48:46 <ithabarr> That would be great!
14:49:04 <docrea> Basically the team documented everything (part of the requirement in my class)
14:49:45 <lorip> we are getting close to the end of our hour - are there questions about Stage 2 (our meeting in Philadelphia)?
14:49:50 <lorip> #topic Stage 2 Questions
14:51:23 <lorip> people are set with getting to Philadelphia?
14:51:44 <Aria> Do you know the location of the hotel?
14:51:46 <Leo_> Do we have the hotel info yet?
14:51:52 <lorip> yes - one minute
14:52:30 <ithabarr> I’ll be driving…I assume that I can drive directly to the hotel and check in?
14:52:39 <Leo_> I will be driving as well
14:52:43 <RonM> I have air transportation done but wonder if I should be doing anything about ground transportation.
14:52:43 <lorip> Club Quarters - 1628 Chestnut St - Philadelphia, PA
14:52:57 <Leo_> Is parking free?
14:53:08 <lorip> we already have a room block set up, so you don't have to do anything for the hotel
14:53:22 <docrea> Have my plane ticket. Just was waiting to hear about the hotel, so I'm set (except getting to the hotel, that is)
14:53:47 <lorip> RonM: we will be sending out information about ground transportation a bit closer to the meeting
14:54:26 <george-thomas> traveling with another faculty attending POSSE so we are set for air travel
14:54:35 <darci> That information will also include parking info.
14:54:36 <RonM> lorip: thanks
14:55:06 <Leo_> lorip, thakns
14:55:22 <lorip> Leo_ https://clubquartershotels.com/philadelphia - there is a parking link
14:55:56 <darci> lorip: did we have some people park at Drexel last time?
14:56:21 <lorip> yes, I was just about to say that - Drexel parking I believe is cheaper, Greg will have more information on that
14:57:00 <lorip> other questions?
14:57:15 <Leo_> no from me
14:57:32 <ithabarr> I’m good. Thanks to everyone, this has been very helpful! Looking forward to the next chat!
14:57:53 <george-thomas> I'm good, thanks.
14:57:59 <darci> bye all!
14:58:04 <lorip> we plan to have 1 more IRC meeting before Philly (the week of June 6th)
14:58:08 <Aria> Bye, thanks!
14:58:13 <docrea> Thanks all
14:58:20 <lorip> thanks everyone! hope your semesters are almost done!
14:58:22 <wahlst> Sounds good - thanks!
14:58:23 <RonM> Bye and thanks.
14:58:28 <docrea> If you have more Ushahidi/mobile questions look me up.
14:58:39 <ithabarr> Thanks docrea, I will!
