!topic Fedora 41 post-release check-in
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:12:29
well, things mostly seem to be going okay?
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:12:41
someone on mastodon was very upset about the gimp snapshot we shipped, yesterday
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:13:06
did anyone bother testing that? i knew we were shipping a pre-release, but hey, it got signed off through the change process and it's not release blocking, so...
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:13:21
i did use it once during the cycle i think, it worked okay for what i needed.
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:13:36
I am using Gimp occassionally and did not notice anything bad with it.
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:13:45
I still have some common issues proposals in my backlog to go through, sigh. Like the `mousekeys` one.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:13:58
oh yeah, that looked bad
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:14:02
I was glad that we had the 3.0 (although prerelease) version.
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:14:02
or bluetooth
<@frantisekz:fedora.im>
16:14:30
I was able to accomplish some basic stuff in the shipped gimp 3.0 just fine
<@frantisekz:fedora.im>
16:14:36
the one in u-t
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:16:37
hmm, I found one issue that I wasn't able to debug - my F39->F41 upgrade didn't receive new desktop apps like Camera and Ptyxis
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:16:51
even `dnf group upgrade` didn't bring them
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:17:00
hmm
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:17:11
but I assume nobody will want to care about it at this point
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:17:23
there are no obsoletes so it's normal that a regular upgrade doesn't switch, but i would've thought group update woul
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:17:36
there are no obsoletes so it's normal that regular upgrade logic doesn't switch, but i would've thought group update logic would
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:17:41
Really? Because I saw another situation, the new applications arrived but coexisted with the old ones.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:17:49
yeah, that's what i'd expect...
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:18:08
we could test a scratch f39 install and upgrade and see what happens?
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:18:24
Sure, I will do it.
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:18:30
I have a suspicion that the recently added `exclude_from_weak_autodetect` option to dnf (possibly also with dnf5) makes the group command be not useful
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:18:36
maybe try with dnf and gnome-software and see if it's different
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:18:42
but that's just a guess. It takes a lot of time to figure this out
<@lruzicka:matrix.org>
16:19:00
Rogers. Kenny.
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:20:18
alright. on the whole seems like we're doing fine
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:24:44
!topic Dist-git replacement and Konflux updates
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:24:56
so, i wanted to make sure everyone's up to date with the exciting ongoing developments...
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:25:29
in case anyone didn't know, pagure is going away, to be replaced by either gitlab f/oss edition or forgejo (which is a fork from gitea)
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:26:04
Adam, that's both for pagure.io _and_ src.fp.o right?
<@amoloney:fedora.im>
16:26:24
Yep
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:26:24
yes
<@farchord:fedora.im>
16:26:28
ok
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:27:37
there's a process ongoing to evaluate the options, and there are demo instances of each forge - https://gitlab.gitlab-gitlab-system.apps.fedora.cj14.p1.openshiftapps.com/ for gitlab, https://forgejoroute-communishift-forgejo.apps.fedora.cj14.p1.openshiftapps.com/ for forgejo
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:27:46
there aer a bunch of links about the process at https://fedora-arc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/dist-git-comparison/index.html
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:31:33
right now, i believe, we're being asked to evaluate the use cases we came up with previously against both forges. the folks in brno are working on that
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:32:02
note there's a bit of scope vagueness here in that the new forge is likely also going to be a candidate to replace bugzilla, and most of our uses cases are bugzilla things, not things from the current dist-git pagure
<@kparal:matrix.org>
16:34:21
if anyone is aware of a QA use case that doesn't seem to be viable in one of the forge demos, ping me
<@amoloney:fedora.im>
16:34:25
The investigation is largely looking at replacing src.fp.o. with either gitlab or forgejo. Project hosting is important, but can work on a functional level with either option. How fedoras dist-git setup is is a bit more....complex I suppose would be a word for it 🤷♀️
<@amoloney:fedora.im>
16:34:25
The highlights at this point are:
<@amoloney:fedora.im>
16:34:25
The report on how each forge fared against use cases is due to fedora council by Dec 5th.
<@amoloney:fedora.im>
16:34:25
I would *love* to say we'd get a decision then by the end of the year, but this is something we should not rush, so it might be January
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:36:19
so yeah, please flag up anything you find to kamil, or post it on https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/inviting-testers-for-git-forge-usecases/129016/ . if you have a use case that isn't already covered at https://pagure.io/fedora-infra/arc/issue/164 you can add it there (but do read the existing ones, a lot of stuff is covered)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:36:44
!info dist-git forge replacement process is ongoing, please see the links at https://fedora-arc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/dist-git-comparison/index.html and contribute your feedback
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:37:45
as for the other thing: konflux is red hat's shiny new...thing...for...building...stuff
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:38:17
it's built on tekton - https://tekton.dev/
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:38:29
currently it mostly builds containers, but rh has grand plans for it to build, well, everything
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:38:47
konflux page - https://konflux-ci.dev/
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:40:13
konflux will be coming to fedora also. at least, we're trying. if it fails miserably, so be it. there is a fedora konflux instance at https://konflux.apps.kfluxfedorap01.toli.p1.openshiftapps.com/application-pipeline/ , see https://gist.github.com/ralphbean/a3644111a549e8cedb0b207f90d42dc9 for more info on it
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:41:19
various folks are working on ideas to actually build stuff in it. we may try building the newish bootc base and IoT images (which are currently built with rpm-ostree in the IoT compose) in konflux instead. there's going to be an effort to try building RPMs in konflux
<@sumantrom:fedora.im>
16:42:16
For the dist git stuff, we have a meeting on the Thursday
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:44:18
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/konflux-fedora-bootc/134947 is a topic about the bootc stuff
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:44:32
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/konflux-meetings-every-other-wednesday/131996 is about meetings of a konflux-in-fedora SIG (sign up if you're interested)
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:45:03
this is mostly just a "heads up, stuff's gonna be happening, follow along/join up if you're interested" topic
<@adamwill:fedora.im>
16:46:44
!info Konflux is the shiny new thing for building things, various efforts are ongoing to try using it for stuff in Fedora. see https://gist.github.com/ralphbean/a3644111a549e8cedb0b207f90d42dc9 , https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/konflux-fedora-bootc/134947 , https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/konflux-meetings-every-other-wednesday/131996 and some other places
